Last I knew COD and Destiny were being assaulted by a DDoS attack via the Lizard Squad. May still be happening.
Was really bad last night here. Not so much today though.

I keep getting error: caterpillar/cattle at the most inopportune moments. Certainly not worth $60.

Its a Ddos attack from hackers. Nothing Bungie can really do but cut traffic to their servers to clean it up.
-
DDoS happens all the time. Doesn't explain why it's still happening. There's been plenty of time for them to fix their security issues, imo.
-
This is all second hand information from someone else. Supposedly the lizard group are still pissed at Sony and continue this attack periodically and thats why it keeps happening. Bungie fixes, lizard attacks again.
-
I guess I don't understand how they can fix an issue and then it becomes an issue again. It's like fixing a leaky sink just to have it leak again....
-
I dont know much about DDos attacks but Im looking at it as a leaky facet that gets fixed then someone takes a hammer to the pipes and starts beating until it leaks again. Maybe a more knowledgeable reader can enlighten me to how it works.

Ddos would be more like shoving a massive amount of dirt or clay or something into the pipe, blocking it temporarily and making the sink overflow if it was on (usually crashes the server, they restart it) Ddos at its simplest and least effective is me pinging google.com. Ddos attacks like the ones lizard squad are launching use an army of computers (usually not theirs, but they've acquired access to use their processing power via a virus, this is called a botnet) and ping one server from all of these at the same time over and over until the server can no longer handle the load and crashes or simply can't be reached by anyone else until the attack is over, or the server reboots. There probably is, but I don't really know of a way to stop ddos attacks from happening..
-
So as of now there really is nothing bungie can do to permanetly stop the ddos?

Edited by SJohnson1021: 10/1/2014 2:41:19 PMI'm not so strong on the network security side of computing.. Better at programming.. But.. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ddos+prevention There are apparently a few ways, but I honestly have no idea how effective they would be.. Basically they would have to filter traffic and find a way to let legitimate network communications through, while blocking the rest of them, which might result in some legitimate traffic being flagged and blocked... Maybe.. Again, not my specialty, so if someone more knowledgeable wants to jump in..

The whole point of fixing a DDoS is to make sure some guy with a hammer can't come back into your kitchen and start smashing pipes. No point in fixing the faucet if you're just going to leave your windows and doors unlocked....
