This really irks me. When I'm playing Destiny I can distinctly notice that the game is moving my cursor around. It causes it to slow down and forces it to follow the target a little. I hate that in games.
It throws off my throwing knife aim. (Hunter class)
It throws off my sniper rifle aim.
It throws off my semi-automatic scout rifle aim.
It makes the menu more irritating and longer to navigate.
I am a good enough player to beat the game just fine without any sort of help with where I'm aiming. When I switched from the PS4 to the PS3 I found the auto-aim to be a bigger problem because of the smaller display size and the less sensitive joysticks. I hate it the most when I'm trying to fight groups of enemies.
Perhaps I am aiming at the Dreg behind the shielded Captain. How can the game tell? The aim-assist will then make it harder to look away from the tougher enemy so I can get a shot at the weaker one. It has not caused the death of me, but it throws off my aim enough so that it becomes harder and more irritating to make that shot.
I've been playing console shooters for eight years now. I dislike the reduction of control and I dislike how it makes simple things less fun. I don't need help with aiming and I think Bungie should make it an option I can disable.
EDIT:
Target Attraction and Target Weight: This is what I was complaining about in Destiny. Target Weight makes your crosshair move at a lower sensitivity when targeting enemies. Target Attraction makes your crosshair follow an enemy when it moves, acting against wherever else you are trying to look.
Halo probably had some of the best aim assist in any game and is what put FPS shooters on the map for consoles. The destiny aim assist is clearly drawn from it. The aim assist is almost never noticeable when I play, but I know it helps a lot. A console shooter with poor auto aim just isn't as fun to play. Easy to use controls is a hallmark of bungie. From their superior aim assist to the steering of all the vehicles. Few games could compete with Bungies quality when it came to game controls.
