i Believe i have discovered part of what makes all this shit happens, as we know destiny require some ports on router to be opened wich are Destiny Port Range Direction 7500-17899 (TCP) Outbound 30000-40399 (TCP) Outbound 35000-35099 (UDP) Inbound and Outbound 3074 (UDP) Inbound and Outbound some internet providers simply DON'T ALLOW this ports to be opened. Yesterday i call their support at my home, and the central and the technician said that's for policy they do not open this kind of ports for security reasons. SO BUNGIE, PLEASE TAKE OUT THIS KIND OF RESTRICTION ON NET CODE TO EVERYONE PLAY IT PROPERLY. thanks in advance.

That may not be possible. Destiny works like a P2P network client. The reason you're having issues is probably because your ISP doesn't allow any P2P activities on their network. Actually, it's less likely that they block those ports specifically, as P2P clients like uTorrent can be configured to use pretty much any port over 1000. Rather they are detecting P2P like network packets on any port and blocking those instead. This is just a guess, but you might need to be more specific with your questions to your ISP to get at the root cause.

  • they do block this ports. i have requested personally to the technician and they replied me with this. Also to make a ps2 router configuration these ports are necessary. so to me as far as continue with this provider it's impossible to play this game properly. here in brazil most people user Net Virtua and many of my friends also have the same issue.

I have to say that this sounds very strange. As an ISP you don't want to block any more ports than necessary as that often breaks applications like games, which is a big demand driver for broadband service. The proper way would be to do packet and data filtering to disallow certain types of data being transmitted over the network, not just wholesale blocking of ports. Sounds like your ISP is being lazy and not doing the proper job of managing and configuring their network. As I pointed out in the post below, ports in the range of 1001 - 65535 (with the exception of 8080) are defined under the TCP/IP standard as general ports available for use by user applications. Just blocking a bunch of ports is a pretty stupid way to achieve "network security."

  • It really makes you wonder why Destiny even needs such a gigantic range of ports open. There's no need. It's just shoddy workmanship and poor design practices used on the netcode, so now they are feeling the pain by overlapping on typical ports blocked by network security filters. Hence the issue that occured with many University networks. To me, Bungie/Activision made it seem like it was everyone else's fault. It's really Bungie/Activision's fault for needing a stupid wide range. Just pick a couple of ports already commonly used by gaming applications and call it a day. Seriously.

Yes there is a reason. The reason is that they are reserving enough ports to allow for a lot of concurrent P2P-like network packets to be passed among all the clients in the same P2P network. They are passing along a lot of positional data for all the objects in a particular game instance and also voice data for members in your fireteam. Imagine tracking all the people and objects in game along with animations, weapons being fired and the impact points for munitions, explosions, etc. Yeah, that's a lot of data. You could argue that other FPS games don't need such an extensive range of ports, but then again, other FPS games use a client-server type of architecture and they have a hard limit on how many people can be in each particular match. They don't allow people to just seamlessly drop in and out of public spaces. Destiny was set up in this way to potentially allow an unlimited number of concurrent clients for public gameplay - and if not unlimited, at least such a huge number as to appear unlimited to players. I suppose Bungie could change the range of ports used, but in TCP/IP all reserved ports for critical network functions are below 1000. A backup port for HTTP is set at 8080. Pretty much anything from 1001 all the way up to 65535 are ports available for any use. Rather, the network security filters you're referring to has to do with the filtering of P2P-like data packets and not necessarily what port range they come from.
