Bungie already talked about this some time ago, things may have changed. However, if memory serves there are going to be 3 core games, ie Destiny and 2 full sequels, coming out with a major expansion in between each release. With a sprinkle of smaller DLC content to tide us over here and there.
Think of it like a book series. The games are like books, each a complete story with a distinct beginning and end, that also tell the larger over arching story of the series as a whole. The expansions are like a side story that comes out to fill in some of the blanks and keep readers interested while the next book is being written.
Something like that, or at least that's the last I've heard on it. Although given the goal of a 10 year series, this mixed release strategy has the best chance of carrying the series to the end.

The bungie/Activision contract had 4 full games in it, but yes to everthing else
-
Was it 4? I thought it was 3, I was just operating off my memory of something I read months ago. Pretty close I'd say haha.
-
Yeah it was but who knows what the plan is now. The contract allows them to pretty much do what they want as long as it's ok with Activision. But yes, it did say 4 full games with a comet dlc per game
-
Well, I don't think I've ever been happier to be wrong. This means one more game for me.
-
Yeah I know. I just hope they stick to the plan though. I can see them going a decade with just 3 games. On the flip side of that, I can see Activision getting them to push out 4 games in 10 years. There's always the chance they could go over 10 years too
-
Well, I'm happy that there is at least a guaranteed 10 years of games.
-
Agreed
-
Well said, and i agree that the mixed release strategy will not only help carry the series, but give it longevity
-
That's the hope. I for one will be glad to get regular scheduled content. Always something to look forward too.
-
Yeah there's no need for the game to die out in the first year, as long as there is regular scheduled content, then i have hope. Longevity it's key for a good game, especially a game like Destiny
-
One can only hope.
