So am I the only that thinks "Fun" "exciting" "a great new experience" are all terms to be associated with destiny, but "MMO"... Not so much? It just bothers me that "MMO" gets plastered to destiny in so many conversations when in my opinion, an "MMO" it is not. Don't get me wrong I loved the beta and I'm going to buy and enjoy it for the foreseeable future... but It just rubs me the wrong way when I see it associated with "MMO" constantly. I'd love to here other views on the matter.

Anyone who thinks this game is a MMO is an idiot hands down. Bungie said specifically it isn't and guess what? It's not.
-
5 RepliesMassively multiplayer online. Pretty sure destiny is all three. Proplem is most mmo's suck. People need to stop denying that destiny fits the bill and instead embrace the fact that this may be the new standard.
-
7 RepliesThe only MMO part of this game is the public events. So call it MMO like
-
-
By the sense that some call it a mmo, you would figure that Bored erLands was a mmo. Dark Souls was a mmo. and Mine craft was a mmo. lol
-
I just use the term "video game." It usually gets the point across
-
Hmm I normally describe Destiny to friends this way pretend Bungie went to Brazil and met up with Master Chief, Cod, Dungeon's and Dragons and they got mixed up in one of those wild orgies with a super model and Destiny would be the product. @_@
-
Saying Destiny isn't a mmo, is kinda like saying a blood orange isn't a orange. Sure it may not be a typical orange, and isn't exactly like an orange, but it's still an orange.

Edited by Marathon: 8/23/2014 4:39:17 AMMMO = Massively Multiplayer Online SWS = Shared World Shooter ( FPS that has a world, in this case "destiny" that can be shared with players ). Not like co-op, but more like a single player campaign with multiplayer focus. Does that make sense? It's my interpretation of what bungie is trying to do.
-
4 RepliesIf you call a square a square, then destiny is a MMO. It may be a unique MMO, the first of its kind but an MMO none the less. I don't know why people are in denial about this.
-
It's not an MMO at all. MMOs are all about the social aspect. Destiny doesn't have proximity chat or even a chatbox. It's just an open multiplayer shooter is all.
-
2 RepliesOmg people, I don't know how many times I need to hear this, bungie has CONFIRMED that destiny IS NOT an MMO, it is an OPEN WORLD SHOOTER.
-
1 ReplyIt may have lots of online features but it's definitely not a full MMO. I would rather call it a shooter with lots of MMO elements.
-
To me, Destiny is a Hybrid game. It mixes with different aspects of other genres to be how it is.

This game is a massively multiplayer online game. You get to have battles with intimate groups because Bungie magically connected you to all these people without giving you the burden of group hunting. This makes the game better than other MMOs that require countless hours of standing around waiting on people.
-
I guess a better way of saying it is "MMO like" or "simi-MMO" but I agree it isn't completely an MMO but it does have MMO qualities.
-
2 RepliesMMO, while not technically correct, isn't exactly incorrect either. This game uses many features of an MMO. Yes, you can only be in the same game space as 16 people at once, but you are still linked by everyone playing the game. People are dropping in and out of everyone's world constantly so you're always being connected with new people. The endgame content is very much derived from MMOs. With daily quests, weekly quests, strikes, and raids, the similarities are very striking. MMO is not a bad term, and should not be taken as such. The fact that people associate the term, among many other terms, to it just shows that it has innovation to it. People don't know how to classify it because it has so many aspects of so many genres. Instead of being hung up on genre titles, let us rejoice in the fact that Bungie has successfully managed to merge so many genres into one!

18 RepliesMmo means massively multi-player online.. Is destiny all those 3?then yes it can be clarified as an mmo

Edited by Barry MacCockiner: 8/22/2014 2:56:20 PMI don't think it's an MMO. The spaces are too small. Meaning matches that are on Earth will barely have 10 people, at least in the Beta, and there's not as much customization that comes with an MMO. I prefer FPS. Or SWS. Those terms fit much better. I agree, when MMO is associated with this game, it makes me want to break shit.
-
It has a lot of MMO characteristics to it. But I wouldn't call it a straight up MMO.
-
Well 16 players playing at the same time is not a massive number of players right ^^ About RPG, to be able to level up, gain new powers, change armor weapons and stuff sounds like a RPG game to me. But not sure of what is a "role playing" in a game.. ^^
-
It's a SWS. Shared World Shooter... The first of it's kind. It's Destiny, nothing less but so much more
-
5 RepliesPersonally I feel that the big controversy is really just a big miscommunication. I like Bungie's idea of coining SWS. Its is a game like no other, so it deserves its own class. However, people are misunderstanding the acronym MMO. The hear it and automatically think WoW or guild wars, but thats not the case. No one can dispute that it is an MMO. It is a fact, but... it is not a MMORPG! That is the kicker here. It has no role-playing game aspects. There isn't going to be a role-playing server to log into just to play out your character. So to answer OP's question, no it's not wrong to use the term MMO. Its the actual term for what the game actually is. Bungie has deemed it a SWS to avoid confusion with other games within the MMO main genre (which has sub-genres like RPG for example) and to help ease along sales with the "bros" who wouldnt dare buy a game with the MMO moniker blazzened across it. So thats just my take. If you disagree, or have an intelligible argument against it, leave a comment. We can have a rousing good debate about it. Maybe I'm wrong who knows!

5 RepliesIn terms of its actual STRUCTURE, Destiny is as much of an MMO as you're going to get with an AI-based FPS. There comes a point with this sort of gameplay mechanic that you wind up with so many things on the screen, that it becomes overwhelming and the mind simply sees it as chaos. Even with true MMOs, the combat usually third-person and short range. So even when you have lots of people on the same server, the combat tends to CLUSTER, so there's less that any individual player has to keep track of. But look at Destiny's sever structure...and I guarentee you that it will be identical to that of any MMO. The problem is that people have preconceptions and expectations that they attach to "MMO"...and those have the ability to strongly color people's judgements of anything you attach that lable to. Firstly, MMOs and FPS tend to attract different types of gamers. So Bungie avoided calling it an "MMO" to avoid attracting the WoW crowd, and alienating shooter fans. Second, you get the kind of reaction you're having. That it's not an "MMO" because there isn't 100 people running around on the screen. Even though no server could handle that kind of load----plus provide intelligent AI targets---all with the computing demands that FPS place on servers. Despite the fact that Destiny has all the OTHER aspects that define MMORPGs. Bottomline, is that it IS an MMORPG---FPS. Because it is a FPS, it is not what people are USED TO seeing when they think of an MMO. That is why Bungie has avoided calling it an MMO.

Its as much an MMO as GTA: Online.
...means its not.
