I know there are indirect biblical references (Halos, John 1:17, etc.) but do people in the Halo universe still believe in Christ, let alone any religion?

Johnson was raised Christian by his aunt, I don't remember whether it said or implied that he still kept to the faith when he grew up, but he's definitely at least nominally Christian as some of his views in Contact Harvest (primarily in how they pertain to the Insurrection and how he doesn't like killing other humans) are at least somewhat based in Christian ideology. And the character Dutch in ODST is a Christian. So yeah, the religion obviously still exists in the Halo universe, it's not really mentioned though because it's not something important to the story, the same with other mainstream religions or ideologies. I'd imagine that all or most of the modern religions from today are probably still around in some shape or form.

3 RepliesEdited by Froggert: 7/29/2013 1:51:33 AMIt exists in the Halo Universe I'm sure, but that doesn't mean it is still practiced as of the 2500s (it probably isn't)

I'd prefer it if writers didn't bring faith into fiction. Tends to end in blasphemy.

Edited by Slothful Koala: 8/10/2013 2:37:13 AMAbsolutely. I believe in recent books such as Glasslands and The Thursday War Halsey talks about religion and her beliefs. No surprises in what they are since she is a scientist.

It's probably not that common by then.

2 RepliesIt still exists, but it appears that Christianity has died down in terms of a religion. I'm sure the finding of other planets with alien life on them during the age of colonization dashed away a lot of the hardcore christians.

1 ReplyJohnson was religious "the lord works in mysterious ways, but not today" "I don't care if it's god's own anti-SOB machine or a giant hula hoop"
-
It probably exists, but isn't as widespread as it is now.

I'd assume there is still some sort or form of different religions in Halo. (Aside from the covenant) I'm personally glad to see in Halo that everyone has settled their differences over race and religion and started focusing on murdering one another and started a war over corrupt and over powering governments... If only we could focus our "war powers" on this instead of religions XD
-
Dutch from ODST was pretty religious. Always mentioned "the lord".
-
The Halo Encyclopedia mentions Pakistan as an Islamic State, therefore modern religions do exist in Halo.
-
Yes, Dutch, one of the ODST's from Halo 3: ODST is a Christian.
-
Seeing as how the Halo Universe is a fictional future of the real world, I'd say yes.

It was(I think) Roland that says "May God help us" So maybe it exists or is no longer believed in since the Great Schism.
-
I remember reading halo lore and I saw that Dutch studied religion in college. Dutch was one of the ODST's
-
I know SGT Johnson was religious because of his mom, most likely a Christian

Edited by Kafuu Chino: 7/29/2013 1:57:59 AMI think there's a character in Contact Harvest who is a Lutheran, a Christian denomination. And religion has been referenced by characters several times, particularly by Johnson: "I don't care if it's God's own anti-son-of-a-bitch machine", "Usually the good Lord works in mysterious ways".

I'm pretty sure there are references to Christianity and perhaps other religions by several characters in the books.
