No, that sort of thing ALWAYS unbalances the game. And d&d is a terrible example, it's horrifically unbalanced. My brother plays it a ton, and is always telling me about this or that broken build.
I do hope race does more than change your face. Maybe race exclusive bases or visual customization options for your ships or armor? Like the Awakened get glowing runes on their armor or ships?
But no stat buffs. having it affect the world and add to your identity would be more enjoyable anyway. It would be cool if even an awoken titan is kind of mystical and glowy while an EXO warlock is dark and spiky (if you use the racial armor customizations).

Seems like an interesting idea adding more aesthetic things to the race. Still, are those other games racial builds or class builds? Because I play DnD on paper and even my crappy roll (we're talking 14 max and mostly 10s) Ranger still made it out fine, thanks to strategy and the class itself.

It's not that any build in D&D truly sucks, it's that some are unquestionably better. And what you have to remember about d&D is that it's not that competitive. Being unbalanced is annoying, but not that important. Destiny will have a major pvp component. Balance is vitally important. Anything that will throw off the balance for no real reason is probably best just avoided.

Indeed, point well taken. Thank you.

You're welcome. For what it's worth I do want the races to do stuff. I want them to do as much as humanly possible that won't throw off the balance. Have the different races really tied into the fiction and locations and designs and stuff. Maybe some unique racial flair on the various abilities would be cool? I just think giving them specific benefits would be more trouble than it's worth.

I guess there really is no basis to say how much is too much for an RPG, and then toning even that extreme down to a shooters simplicity. Heck, there isn't really anything out there to show how little is too little. O Brave New World, hahaha.
