However...I also see the logic in doing away with that system...in most people it frees up a lot of choices for them. Most gamers are like I have to do a certain combination because they saw online that it is best! Bungie is forcing people to break out of that mindset.

Right, and that is an interesting plan of attack for the game. There will always be players that find the uber builds and then post the findings to the internet, it's usually inevitable. By balancing out the race perks in the way I was thinking, race is still not the regret factor, but rather what bonus there is to being a certain class (Simplified: the focus is actually on further helping fine tune the class).
-
The problem as I see it, and why I disagree with it, is that race diferences and/or perks invariably lead to one particular combination yielding a definitve build for that race. In this instance why would you limit yourself by trying out any other builld when it will be inferior by degree to the most effective combination of race/class. In turn, this, by default of people desiring to have the best character build and all the advantages that accrue therein, funnels you down certain paths in order not to be disadvantaged. It inadvertently removes choice.
-
I suppose as a primary character, yes, it would be inevitable. However, because we would have the ability to build multiple characters, what's to say there's a wacky build in there that is leisurely and fun, removing the desire to be the best in competition? I think we'll all have that one character, but we'll also have the "I wonder how funny it would be if..." character.

True, I fear you're ascribing greater generosity of temperament than is usually to be found in MP shooters though.
-
No need to fear, you're probably spot on, haha. Still, that's for the multiplayer aspect of the game, to which I'm hoping is going to be nothing but arenas in safe zones (made a comment in another topic about that thought. Take a look). Thinking about it further, I think a lot of the race selection is going to depend on how well Bungie's Lore/Story writers create the races. If it's crap, then people will look at numbers (or not at all). That text should be complex enough for "tl;dr" to take affect, yet also get the primary point across in the first two sentences.
-
The impression (mine anyway) is that there won't in reality be anything but multiplayer, even if your going the solo story route. It's supposed to be seamlessly integrated and I can't see anything other than the competitive dimension being hived off as a separate, opt-in, option. It's part of the vision and meant to encourage the co-op nature of same. This is a good thing, but as Reach's Firefight mode demonstrated people can still be asshats in co-op play. AFK'ers were the ruination of FF Matchmaking (a tad hyperbolic, I know). With regards to your second consideration, I agree fully, the analogy to "tl;dr" is spot on.
-
For both our sakes, I hope you're right about the competitive side of things. Based on folks on her mentioning that you can carry your stuff into the PvP area, I'm nervous it's going to be nothing but snipers and rockets, so if it's outside the game, maybe the weapons are generic and the armor is what stays unique to your character. The campaign will be a mixture of public and private zones with no real indication of whether you're in a public or private space. So, yes, it will always be multiplayer, but I feel comfortable taking on story missions alone unless the revive system forces you back to the City (in which case, I'll ask for help).

That would be amazing if they could balance the fine tuning with skill and your play style. I saw too many Borderlands 2 players who instead of making a build to match their play style they copied of mine or a forum build, but because of their reliance on the build they were not able to face 2/3s off the enemies and died constantly. However your small perks would not be overpowered and would help with the lore. What I am hoping is that we have numerous skills that we can upgrade to the tee to fit us.

I'm so glad you mentioned Borderlands 2. I have never gone on the net to check builds and whatnot for exactly the reasons you stated: It's my playstyle. More importantly than that is the amount of weapons and items in that game were so vast, I had to constantly ask myself "what is best in life" for multiple parameters. In the end, if I had to sacrifice one stat over another, I found I eventually adapted to the loss of what I had in favor of the more powerful choice and continued to play with a smile on face. Key words used: I adapted. If there was just a tiny, minuscule change to the races, it would provide players an early lesson in adapting, which is key in a shooter like Bungie's.
-
I personally all for people giving advice on how your play style would benefit from this skill or this set of skills, but you need the ability to adapt and think for yourself so you can take that advice and make a ridiculous build for you. I would love skyrimesque race perks that fit into lore for my Exo Titan. Hell, what would really be great is if they do a mass effect/fallout 3 GOAT test background story that gives you certain perks.

Yeah, there you go! I don't like referring to other games, simply because it gets tossed out as "but it's not trying to be ______!!!". Skyrim is a prime example of taking a race and flipping it around. In fact, even the NPCs were all over the place on skills so it didn't really matter what benefits you had (Heck, I had a Wood Elf focused on Heavy Armor and Two Handed Swords. Animal Calm technique that he had really helped a few times. Yes, it took slightly longer to improve the skills needed, but not by much.
