In their discussion of the three recently confirmed playable races, the Guardians of Destiny (podcast linked above) brought up an thought-provoking point. They suggested that the major incentive to roll human could be our loyalty to the species, as the story of Destiny seems to be humanity's fight back from the brink of collapse. We know that players will be guardians of the Last [human?] City on Earth, so where do these new races come into play? Why are they enlisting to defend this city?
Had these races allied with humanity before "something hit us."
Are these races somehow descendants of humans?
Did these races appear as part of The Traveler's last-minute defense of humanity?
Let me know what direction you guys think Bungie will take it and how you would integrate the Exo and the Awoken into the story if it were up to you!

But Exo I could see being a group of people who have tended towards technological integration to the point of sacrificing their humanity. They were heading towards singularity during the Golden Age, but are now relics of the past. Unable to die, but unable to progress because of technological regression. Awoken... an appeal towards the ladies in the Bungie community. Before you flame me, c'mon, they had a picture of Edward Cullen on their inspiration page.
