In their discussion of the three recently confirmed playable races, the Guardians of Destiny (podcast linked above) brought up an thought-provoking point. They suggested that the major incentive to roll human could be our loyalty to the species, as the story of Destiny seems to be humanity's fight back from the brink of collapse. We know that players will be guardians of the Last [human?] City on Earth, so where do these new races come into play? Why are they enlisting to defend this city?
Had these races allied with humanity before "something hit us."
Are these races somehow descendants of humans?
Did these races appear as part of The Traveler's last-minute defense of humanity?
Let me know what direction you guys think Bungie will take it and how you would integrate the Exo and the Awoken into the story if it were up to you!

Hence the Vex now employ time travel. =) I think the exo's might have been the result of advancements in technology and partially how the human race was able to spread and dominate the solar system prior to the Traveller's arrival. I think the awoken maybe like a religious order prior to the Traveller's coming whom prophecised the events leading up to the alien attacks. Maybe they were not taken seriously but emerged from seclusion after the Traveller's arrival - having been hidden away in meditation and having awaited the purge. Those who have survived may have an affintity with the Travellor hence they all get along?
