I'm really surprised this feature does not exist here.

I'll be honest with you, I feel as though saying "This feature not being being present in this sites design, seems to be somewhat of a flaw when you consider the supposed intent of the design which is 'connectivity' if I'm not mistaken" is a tad arrogant when considering the fact that I have no credentials in web design nor any authority over how this site should function. And you know what? If it was simply a personal concept or opinion of mine that I believed not many others would care for, something that was simply an idea of my own preference, then I likely wouldn't be bothered to present this to any of you. I've been coming to this site for many years, and I've watched it evolved many times into many forms. Each evolution seemed to build and improve on its predecessor, including this model which added many great features. Yet something feels like it was left out. Like an important screw that turned certain wheels was forgotten amidst all these awesome features that were added on top. Ask around, and some people may indeed tell you that there is just something missing, some piece of the equation that once existed which now no longer exists. Most everyone I talk to enjoys and welcomes the changes and knows there are certain things they have to become accustom to, but no one can quite put their finger on that one small piece of missing something. But that particular "something" is seemingly causing some individuals to check threads less, check groups less, and maybe even visit less than they once did in the past. After having formed so many friendships and connections here over the past several years the last thing that I want to see is a loss in connectivity between one another here. So, while not all of you may agree with my aforesaid statements, I'm sure there are some of you that do agree. That being potentially so, it is now that I make suggestion to assist in preventing the degradation of networks between friends... The regular functions of each Bungie.net user commonly habitual and methodical. Once we're taking out of our natural habitat, we're forced to form new habits. Unable to recreate the ways in which we once navigated through the site and made our regular stop offs here and there, we simply allowed some of those places we once frequented to fade into the background. So how does one rectify this? In order to recreate that activity or to help bring back the ease of navigation that assisted with methodical navigation, one must the old places we once frequented, right in front of us. It actually seems shallow, lazy and unnecessary to be honest. Unfortunate that in a new setting we for whatever reason don't return to all the same places the same amount of times simply because our roads have been mildly redirected. But in the fast pace hustle and bustle of online interactions, one road block can have devastating affects on the way traffic will flow. With the implementation of a new menu system that forces people to click around in a way they're not familiar with may prevent those people from recreating habits that would have them return to all those same places on a regular basis. Particularly Private Groups in this case, which has been mentioned largely in some areas on this site and off-site. Anyway, lets go back to what I meant when I said "Put it all right in front of us". Well, I mean quite literally just that. The Bungie.net homepage used to be an incredible hub of links and content that were right in front of your face. Aesthetically, they Web Team has now chosen to simplify the home page, which in terms of showing the important content in relation to their game, does a wonderful job. Although the now hidden menus and sub-menus make it extremely easy for us to to fall into the "Out of sight, out of mind" mentality, which of course is - at least I believe - damaging to the sites secondary purpose (Primary Purpose would be showing off Destiny) which is connecting fans. Want to connect fans? Want to put connectivity at the forethought of everyone who comes here next to showing off Destiny? Then sectioning off a decent size of real estate on the home page for customizable news feeds generated from areas selected by users such as Group Activity News, Favorite Type of Threads Activity, Friends Activity, Follower Activity, User Activity, is at least what I believe a solid idea that would help reinstate the flow of activity for users here. You would allow more ease of access and fluidity with less clicking to click to click to click to get to a specific destination. It would potentially allow for more people to see eye catching things that may otherwise go unseen, because I'll be honest, I've only thought to check my "Activity Page" probably half a dozen times after coming here almost daily since the sites update and it's unfortunate to admit admit how little I visit my private groups now, for which the only explanation I can conjure is a result of the changes to the site. So, now that I've ranted for quite some time, I'll just reiterate one more time... Creating some sort of central hub that is clearly displayed at the home page for which we may even customize or tailor to our desires in order to display the many places we don't ever think to go as a result of hidden-menus, I believe would truly benefit this site, especially members who have fallen victim to the "Out of sight out of mind" mentality. Think of it is our own news feed, which would show updates on areas of the site that we chose to see or enjoy frequenting the most. I would proceed to thoroughly detail the concept, but I would like to hear from all of you first. As well, I don't know how easy the coding for such a concept would be so I'm not going to sit here barking off specifics, demanding each thing be implemented, but I do hope that this idea carries and if it is met with agreement by the masses then maybe it will inspire the Web Team to hopefully one day down the road implement such a feature for this site.

  • I disagree with this. It would take away from the Home Page's delectably clean and smooth look. Honestly, I'm happy with everything right now. Well, accept for Bioshock: Infinite not being on my shelf yet.

      • The problem is that such connectivity isn't the home page's job. It can't simultaneously help new users (who see a trailer or something with www.bungie.net on it) get to the good stuff as well as act as a connectivity hub. We've tried to combine these goals before, but it never works well - a super personalized home page just crushes perf, for example. The solution we've come up with is to make the home page a welcome page - it generally looks the same if you're signed in or not. However, if you want your personalized view, you go to your profile page. You have access to everything there. I know people aren't really used to that, especially without any kind of game integration on bungie.net right now. But the point is that if you want that connectivity, it is all there - you just need to use it.

          • I was fully expecting some sort of joke at the end. Bring back navbar? I'M KIDDING. Maybe something the scrolls with me or is always there, not matter where on the site I go: like a menu bar I create myself. Shit I care about, being organized how I want it, just to my right.

          • I agree with you mate, I think the problem is that you can now jump into Bnet and jump out really fast and efficiently, which means it's more suited for skimmers and light discussion, versus the pages of sage wisdom and noobish hilarity that the old Bnet had. Also I haven't seen you posting in a while, stick around will you?

          • I understood everything perfectly until the last few sentences, where I got lost for no apparent reason. But I remember agreeing with you, but also noting that the septagon lets me go to my groups forums quickly. Just right of the friend button.

          • I like the look and feel of the site, although it does take some getting used to and it can be tough to navigate from my phone. The homepage is a little confusing, as it doesn't clearly tell you where the forums are, but I trust any internet veteran would know that the Bungie logo could be a pull-down menu because of the lines next to it.

TL;DR I'm not being sarcastic, as a self-proclaimed novice writer I can tell you it's not good for you to take 3 paragraphs to even mention what your idea is. That aside, I'm more patient than most so i did read it, and i do like it.

                • I seem to have averted this issue. Being an IE9/10 user, I pinned the activity page. My main entry point into b.net is the activity page, I check this page first before venturing into the forums, or the main page. In most cases I will see someone I follow comment or like a topic which quickly gets my attention. I love the activity page and utilize it often. Although I would like to see it formatted differently, perhaps into a user 'home page' of sorts.

I agree. Split the homepage and put the activity tab for users and groups there. Make access to all of those very apparent, but not redundant to the forum-specific menus. The homepage is neat and gets the Destiny job done (although I had no clue there were menus below until recently). Even so, I think there should be more to it than "Here's the game!". The community is just as important and I think that should be made more apparent when you first load the page. The activity tab does most of this, but it is very underutilized from what I've seen.

                • I've been forcing myself to regularly start checking the "Activity Feed". Honestly, I feel it's underused but it's a godsend when you use it right. It's probably the best feature in the new bungie.net along side with hiding/muting. Seriously, if you haven't checked this every time you've signed on for a browsing session, you're doing it wrong. Follow what tags, people and groups you like and everything is addressed right there, waiting for you to look at it. Ever since I started regularly using it over a couple weeks ago, it's so much easier to find everything I want to see at a glance. As for the homepage, I feel there is less emphasis on the "individual user function" and more on "this is our game and you should look at what we're working on!". Bungie, is first and formost, a company. Yes, they have a community, fanbase, product they're trying to sell and mission they're trying to accomplish, but nonetheless, they're a company. They're trying to get as many people on board as possible for their next big universe. I find that the real estate used on the homepage for Destiny is a bit much, but for the number of tablet and mobile users, they're so incredibly friendly. It's a different age than when we first started using bungie.net. I agree with your points, although I don't know what would fix it. I feel focus on individual content should be thrown on the homepage in someway, so users remember, "HEY! I should check on my thread in that private or public forum that I made!", because it's easy to forgot for the average user. But it's there at your leisure to get the content you want. More focus on the homepage would be great. But I'd get in the habit of checking it every time you sign in.

                • Helveck, you could be more succinct friend. Regardless, I agree with you that navigation (or lackthereof) may have been the reason that activity has taken a precipitous decline (at least in the areas I generally frequent) but I don't think your suggestion is going to lead to an increase in activity. The people whose normal routines were interrupted and who didn't take the time to relearn "normal" won't come back due to a change (or rather a return to normal) to navigation. The problem with the release of this website was that there were a lot of changes, most for the better, that were not explained or expanded upon under the guise that this was simply a beta (as if that allows you do put forth less effort in community outreach). A lot of people left right off the bat because of that. The ones that stayed slowly learned how to navigate the new features, to "adapt", and to recreate their normal routine. For the ones that left, as stated before, a different navigation system in my opinion won't be enough to get them back - they already made up their minds. The webteam did not do a good job releasing user guides for the new website in a timely manner (in fact it was left up to users to do so which wasn't exactly timely). While I appreciate you thinking of ways to increase the activity here, it would be nice to see the webteam take a visible stance on solving this problem as well (unlike their release day presence). And here I was going on about being succinct...

                • Huh what do you know- a serious thread. And further surprises- I agree with everything you said. Although one thing I'd change- the homepage itself is out of the way. I come to Bnet via a link straight to the 'all topics' forum. If the reason you stated for this lack of activity in certain areas is correct, which now that you mention it it probably is, I might even be a fan of just... the option to combine everything. Public forum posts go on the public forum. What if my private group threads could appear there too? Just for me ( I mean, each person's groups appear just for them)? I think I'd like that.
