Completely? No. Law enforcement still needs them.
Though it's kind of funny in a sad way that in some countries simply existing there means you need a gun to be or feel safe. But, that's probably the result of underlying socio-economic factors that nobody does anything about.

Most people that own guns for protection don't do it out of paranoia. They may have a job that puts them in harm's way, or they just like having one on the off chance that something bad does happen to them. Most of the people who own guns legally in the US will never use it defensively, but will often use it for sport. If you've never been to a gun range or handled a firearm, I don't think you can make an informed decision on gun control.

Law enforcement probably shouldn't have them. And of course you can feel safer if you are capable of controlling an otherwise dangerous situation.
