OoOoOo pArt 2
The masterpiece of a conclusion to Spider’s bullsh*t Another Mutually Beneficial Trade
“Ordered some more supplies for us.” Shadow throws her cloak amongst her bed of furs. “Good, good,” Variks replies distractedly as he types away at his monitors. Shadow crosses her arms, watching him thoughtfully with her and the Spider’s conversation fresh in her mind. “The Spider told you to “relax,”” she informs him, her fingers creating air quotes. Variks waves a mechanical hand, grumbles to himself, as if expecting that to be all. Casually approaching him, Shadow watches the glowing screens without really paying attention to what’s on them. She strokes a hand over his back affectionately. “Have you talked to the Spider recently? He mentioned you called at some point.” “Yes… we spoke not long ago,” he burbles. “Yeah?” “Yes.” After a moment of silence, Variks stands. “I hear you two got into a bit of an argument?” “Of sorts,” he replies shortly, clearly attempting to avoid the conversation. “I assure, nothing that concerns you.” “Oh really? He said you were pretty upset. Said you should be more grateful for the supplies he sends.” Pausing, she re crosses her arms. “Maybe he’s right,” she adds boldly. Variks turns to face her then, his fingers flexing. “I apologize for losing my temper—“ “I don’t really care if you yell at the Spider,” Shadow admits abruptly, waving a hand. “I want to know why you did.” Variks shifts from foot to foot, interlocking his lower hands. “You know firsthand how the Spider weaves tales,” he says dismissively. “Do not let him catch you in his twisted webs.” “Mm. Is that what you’re worried about? Him tricking me?” She gazes up at him with a mischievous sparkle in her amber eyes. “Or was he right to suggest you were jealous?” “What?” Taken aback, Variks blinks rapidly, his posture straightening. “It’s not like you to be so ungrateful,” she presses. “Surely you had a good reason.” Variks clicks softly, his eyes narrowing now. “Call me ungrateful if you will, Shadow, but I will not show signs of gratefulness when the Spider attempts to gain your affections. He plots and schemes and thinks I will not notice.” His voice is as cold as Europa’s ice. “Do you think I would actually return any affections?” Shadow asks quietly. It stings to think Variks may still not entirely trust her. “No. I do not doubt your loyalty,” he snaps, deflecting before she can respond. “Though you have little authority to speak on this matter. Are we really going to pretend you were not jealous of Petra?” Shadow scoffs, suddenly very warm. She stutters, searching in discomfort for a response. “Hardly—“ “Is that so?” Variks sneers relentlessly. “I seem to recall you nearly losing your hand while attempting the same tricks with your knife—“ He takes her wrist firmly in a lower hand. A small gasp escapes her as he flips it over, revealing the scarred palm her damaged ghost had struggled to heal. “I was practicing!” the hunter insists, swiftly pulling her hand away from him. Variks’s half lidded eyes blink out of sync in mild amusement. “Whatever helps you sleep at night, yes?” Shadow bites back a smile. “You’re avoiding my point...” She rubs her wrist. Variks sighs in defeat, shuffling closer to her. “I admit I am, concerned—“ She smiles. “For your safety,” he snaps irritably as he catches sight of her sharp toothed grin. “—with the Spider.” “And?” “And—“ He inhales, wheezing. “I do not appreciate his antagonizing, his advances. I felt…” Variks pauses thoughtfully. Shadow’s smile disappears, replaced with a solemn, round eyed stare. “Protective, of you,” he decides, turning his face from her. “I fear what he may try to do in my absence.” An awkward hand reaches for her, just barely touching her side. Shadow’s heart thumps painfully against her chest. “You don’t have to worry about me… I’ve dealt with far worse than the Spider.” “I know this. Yet, my love for you keeps me worried all the same...” He raises a real hand to brush his fingers over the side of her face. Taking a step forward, Shadow wraps her arms around Variks’s waist. He purrs softly as she gives him a squeeze and rests her face into the furs around his neck. His lower hands return the gesture. “I can’t believe you allow the Spider to get under your skin,” she murmurs amusedly. “He speaks as if he would take me away, but—“ “But Shadow is Variks’s mate,” he finishes for her softly. “We know this. I simply cannot stomach what he stands for… He is too prideful, in it only for himself. If it means getting something out of it…” His voice is dark with distrust. Sharp claws run through her raven black hair. “Who knows what he may do to my Shadow.” Grasping a mechanical arm, Shadow looks up into his ethereal blue eyes. “I like the way you say that.” Variks scoffs at the renewed smile on the awoken woman’s face, frustrated. Resetting, he gently guides her a step back from him. “Enough of this. I have work to do.” “Mm. Fine.” She lowers her head respectfully. He pauses, narrowing his eyes as he looks down on his partner fondly. “…And wipe that smile off of your face.”
