They know their names. In the grimoire it's shown that Guardians have dreams or visions about their past lives when they sleep or die. Its safe to assume that the name persists if those snippets remain. This is evident in the names of all Exos too. Even if their bodies were labeled with their name, they wouldn't know their number, which dictates how many times they had been wiped.

  • That's a guess and it doesn't hold up very well. The Exos aren't sure, they think it's about resets. When you look at it their reasoning it makes no sense. If it's resets and they do them periodically, they would know for certain. Its been centuries since the Collapse and no Exo has been reset and their number changed? Banshee got reset 44 times in the Golden Age, roughly here centuries total but Exo weren't around for a good bit of it, but not once since? So the numbers are model numbers. Banshee 44 is the 44th Banshee Exo. Cayde 6 is the 6th "Cayde".

No, the lore for exos states that each number represents how many times a memory wipe was done. Some memory wipes continue to happen. Banshee-44 isn't the 44th model, he is basically the same banshee but with new memories And how can Cayde-6 be the 6th model Cayde if he was a one of a kind prototype that was originally human? He had his most of his memory wiped 6 times.

  • There is no concrete lore. There is only the Exos guessing that is what it means. You say memory wipes continue to happen. Where do you see that and wouldn't that prove the issue, one way or the other?

Did I also forget to mention that even Bungie themselves have confirmed that each number represents a memory wipe?

  • Here is a quote from Cayde's notes in the Treasure Island book. "See, the reboots, they don't wipe it all away. Not everything. And the new life-plus the Light-it does something real funny to what's left. Amplifies it, scrambles it, reshuffles the fragments like a dealer riffling a deck of cards, putting the hands we've already won and lost back into play." Reboots are the reason for the number. Why they had the reboots, and why Exo don't get reboots now, that's something we can only guess on. Perhaps it was to remove any excess memory from the system. Banshee says in random dialogue that he can't remember well since before Twilight Gap. That maybe a side effect from going too long without a wipe (though this might also be just him implying he is old or took some damage during the battle). Still, there's a multitude of reasons why a Golden Age human would their Exo bodyguard to be wiped, but with the fall of the Warminds and the Exos becoming independent, there would be no reason to do it to themselves.

  • It's also possible that some exos like Cayde were once human, so memories might come back them better compared to the exos that weren't human but rather ai.

  • Some are possibly Human like Cayde, others are AI

  • For starters, common sense. How do you immediately create robotic bodies for human minds without having tests and inspirations for such. It's likely that Exos were originally created as AI. Then an idea formed and thus Clovis Bray, creator of the Exos, had the idia to start a secret project that could transfer the mind of a human into an exo body (this is mentioned by Cayde himself.)

  • The robot frames used by the Ishtar scientists were remotely piloted by neural interface. They were problematic and didn't work that well. Isn't that, if you want to use common sense, the likely predecessor to the Exo frame? With zero mention of AI being used to create Exo minds, how is that common sense and not a blind reach?

  •
With zero mention of AI being used to create Exo minds, how is that common sense and not a blind reach?
For starters, a frame is not the same as an exo Second, why make an exo without proper testing. AI already existed. Why make a robotic being and not give it some form of thought or intelligence? Why wait to test the very first exo until you have a human mind?

  • So you're just pulling it out of thin air. No support. Just what you -think- about how it would of been done. Thank you.

Thank you.
I think in the Grimiore Cayde-6 & other stories confirm that Exo numbers are based off resets. I know Bubgie confirmed it on "I think" Guardian Radio or something. My name is Byf, Myelin Games & other youtubers have collected & condensed the lore. They say the same thing.

  • The Exos have their opinion on what the number means. Exos repeating it isn't proof. It five people in a group say the world is flat, one of them repeating it later one isn't proof that the first statement is true. Show me a non Exo making the claim. Haven't seen it. You know they confirmed it but don't know where? Sorry but I'm not just taking people at their word that Bungie confirmed it yet no one knows where to find it to support the claim. I could don't equally say I saw proof of my idea but can't remember well. Would you all take me at my word? No. Yet somehow I'm supposed to take yours. Absurd.
