I wish we at least had a name. I cringed at the moment during the rise of iron campaign when Saladin calls us "Lord Guardian". Edit: I get why we are called guardian, I just don't like when we are called lord guardian because it sounded weird and is just bad writing to be honest.

  • I hate it. What I think Bungie should have done was give us a list of the names of the fallen Iron Lords and whichever one we chose, we would be called. You k or, as a way of passing on the torch and becoming the successor of said Iron Lord you chose. But really, I guess that the reason why we are called Lord Guardian is because during the period of the Iron Lords, you were either an Iron Lord, a Warlord, or one of the Risen since there were no true Guardians yet. So really, you being the first of a new generation of Iron Lords means that you are the first Guardian to have become one. Thus, you were deemed as Lord Guardian.

  • What's the problem? Last name Guardian, first name Buddy.

  • Maybe our name is "Guardian"

  • The reason for that is that we are all playing the same character, but that character is supposed to be you. Giving your character a name (that isn't yours) clearly defines them as "not you". Having a million people playing the same character with the same name defines that character as an independent entity. More over various customization options means it creates conflicts in naming conventions.

  • And don't even try to wrap your head the idea that while we're all playing the same character, we're running strikes and raids with 2 to 5 other Guardians who are also playing the same character.

That gets somewhat paradoxical. Everyone plays "The Guardian". In Raids and Strikes while you play TG your teammates are random nameless Guardians. But to them they are playing TG and you are the random nameless Guardian.

  • I agree with this when it's pertaining to a voice, but saying "Lord Guardian" as though that's a formal name is the stupid part. I don't mind being referred to as guardian, but actually saying aloud in a supposedly sacred Iron Lord ceremony our name as "Lord Guardian" is not good writing, player character or no. That is the problem. I wouldn't mind if they changed it up a bit. Why not refer to us as our subclass every now and then? I wouldn't mind someone saying "Nightstalker, we need you to...". The NPCs already sort of do that by calling you Hunter or "Hive Bane". The latter is cool because It's an alias and not personal enough to break the immersion. But Lord Guardian? No. Just say I'm an Iron Lord. That's as bad as naming me.

  • I think it is a title. Like Iron Lord. But the Iron Lords were not traditional guardians as we see them now, but we are. Therefore...Lord Guardian. I see where you're coming from though. It is kind of awkward to say.

  • The awkwardness of it is the problem. I get what they were doing, but in so many other areas of the game we are aslo titled guardian as though it is a placeholder for a name. Most times it's okay. And I know that possibly what they were going for was like how the Night's Watch has "Lord Commander". But when you pepper the story (or the lore at least) with Lord Saladin, Lord Silimar, Lord Felwinter... saying "Lord Guardian" sounds like a name. Not good. The redundancy of "Guardian" doesn't help. I like what they did with Shaxx calling you "hive bane" and what not. I guess it was just the way it was scripted.

  • Maybe Iron Guardian would have been better. It sounds cooler for sure.

  • My god yes. I always said that was just as bad as saying "Lord Player One".
