Theoretically we are damned close to becoming immortal . . .

If that happens, we will have no choice but to colonize other planets.
-
We should be working on that regardless. What ever happened with the Mars mission anyway?
-
It is ongoing. NASA, ESA, and the other space agencies around the world are having to invent new technologies to make Mars a possibility. They have not given up on going to Mars.
-
Good. Even if someone didn't care about the adventure, discoveries and possibilities - they should support it for survival.
-
Agreed. Also, one of the things each agency is concerned with is how the trip over to Mars will affect the astronauts that are going. Part of their research involves leaving people up on the ISS for longer periods of time to record the effects on the human body and minds.

If Mars has less gravity, wouldn't it cause weakening of muscles? I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

Yes, and to a degree, a weakness in the bone structure. Sadly, colonizing planets is not easy, but when you consider some of the tech that will come out of it, it will be worth it. The procedures to combat weakness in bone structure could be applied here on earth to combat bone loss, and that is just off the top of my head. The last time humans landed on an extraterrestrial body, we got the tech that gave us the microwave, cell phone, and many others. I can't wait to see what we develop next.

Hmm.. would be interesting.
