This would force you to choose between exotics and some set bonus which I don't believe you should have to.
I think raid pieces should offer specific perks, but set bonuses? Nah.

Armor variety is irrelevant - there's ornaments and shaders to customize your look. This change is about making raid armor equal to exotics in terms of power. Exotics offer a unique perk in exchange of giving up access to the powerful 5th raid set bonus. That's the compromise you make. Bungie could add more ornaments to raid armor to allow for more appearance customization.

Raid armor (or weapons for that matter) SHOULD NOT equal exotics in any capacity ever. I don't care about appearance. I care about performance and utility. I think raid arms should offer increased reload speed for all *insert raid here* weapons. Legs should offer faster movement speed during *insert mechanic here* or just in the raid in general. Chest should offer armor buff against *raid enemy* Helmet can offer increased super cooldown or something. No set bonuses. No thanks.

Raids are the endgame. Gear from the endgame activity should be BiS.
-
BiS? I'm going to assume it's Best something, and that's still not an argument for them being on the same level of exotics, which they shouldn't be.
-
It's an MMO term for "Best-in-Slot". Endgame activities yield endgame armors and weapons, which are arguably superior to the standard weapons available outside of the endgame activities. For example, the best gear in Vault of Glass should be Vault of Glass gear. Now with Destiny, the idea of exotic gear changes things up a bit. With exotics, there's a unique opportunity to choose between a unique perk with no prior requirement OR...... and that's the problem. Raid gear should be at the end of that OR and right now, it's not. Exotics or raid gear shouldn't be the ONLY option; my suggestion is to give more incentive to choose raid armor over exotics, instead of strictly allowing exotics to be only viable gear for endgame activity.

Getting rid of exotics is a bad idea. Just have the set be one less slot so people can run one exotic and have the full set bonus. That would be ideal for everyone

Why? Why do you think we should be forced into a decision we don't have to make already? Exotics should be the most viable end game gear given that you can wear but one...and the fact that they're more rare than raid gear. Drop late is lower. gear is (and should be) more powerful. I guess I just don't care about the "End Game" label as you do. The rarest, hardest gear to get, should be the most powerful. 3OC ruined that but I have a pretty good feeling it won't work that way in D2. I'd just prefer not to have another gear decision to make for no reason when you could accomplish the same thing without having to give up your exotic slot. Also, the fact that you can only have one exotic slot on either side of your character would lead me to believe that should be BiS...

I disagree that exotics are rarer than raid gear seeing as in almost all activities you can get exotics including raids. That said I agree exotics should be the most powerful gear hence the 1 weapon 1 armor limit. I think raid gear should be optimal for the raid it is from as the weapons in VoG are generally better for VoG due to oracle bonus perk they have. They aren't needed to beat VoG but they give you an edge that makes the exp easier if only a small amount so.
