When creating a character, you have the choice to make your Guardian "Dark". This entails new subclasses, weapons, raids, and armor. If you choose this option, you will spawn into the game like normal, but you choose to investigate the fallen. The fallen capture you and you spend your first story mission trying to escape them. At the end of the mission, they capture you, and more importantly, your ghost. They reprogram your ghost, and have it make you become part of the fallen. (Fallen mindset included) You spend the next few missions working your way up the fallen ladder, killing the things higher in the order than you so you can gain rank. You head to the moon, trying to spread your house. After these missions, you find the hive. (Note, your ghost still has its light, and it is clear sometimes that the light is fighting the programming) The hive uses a mix of their units to capture you. They are surprised that you are a guardian because you are dressed as a fallen. They drain your ghost of most of its light, and the next few missions have modifiers that significantly slow down ability recharge, and your abilities don't recharge when you are healing. As you struggle to regain your light, you learn a new power from the hive that are trying to corrupt you, the sword logic. You gain a new subclass, the hive. Your Hive abilities have very long cool-downs normally, but they are recharged faster by kills. This is specifically suited to the missions. You regain your light, and return to the fallen, your house, with this. As you ally other fallen factions with you, you move to Venus. Here, you encounter the Vex. You find Osiris, and he teaches you the ways of the vex. The same patterns as the previous missions apply, I am running out of time to finish this well. You travel with the vex to mars, and you become part of the cabal. With each enemy, you learn a new subclass based on that enemy type. You would also be able to replace Oryx as the taken king, and you would be able to use your light to overpower a SIVA infection, making you the mystery controller of Aksis. Sorry for the short parts at the end, I am running out of time and ideas.
