Psychology has been my life since I was fifteen years old. After going through a bout of depression and suicide attempts with a few stays in a hospital, the idea of studying the human mind has intrigued my existence.
As some of the closer friends I have established on this forum know, I am currently a junior studying Psychology and Legal Issues with a minor in U.S. History. Recently, I was accepted to an interning position at the local FBI field office for my state next summer. This opportunity is extremely exciting to me. I hope that one day my degree will allow me to work with the FBI, or another criminal investigation agency, to pursue and bring to justice sex offenders who target minors.
Whether you are interested in the field, have a question about possible job opportunities with a Psychology degree, or just have a random question; please feel free to ask.
Thanks and have a great day Offtopic.

5 RepliesI've got one: If a person has a stroke, can psychology help when the brain ignores whole portions of reality? As in the person not only can't see the left side of a page, but they aren't aware that there is a left side to the page at all. And when they describe the street they live on, can only recall the buildings that are on the right side of the street. So it's not a VISUAL issue, as the recollection is from memory and imagination. Can psychology, address this problem? If not, what are the limits to what brain issues psychology can address?

1 ReplyI studied Psychology at A Level in College and my Girlfriend is actually doing a BSc (Hons) Psychology course at University so I've been exposed to the world of Psychology quite a bit. My question to you is with the different approaches Psychology takes to understand Humans (Cognitive, Behaviourism, Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Biological for example), which approach do you feel has the most relevancy to todays society and which approach do you feel most accurately interprets the human mind? Keep going with Psychology though, it's a great field of work to get involved in.

4 RepliesYou have great timing, my friend. Recently I've been thinking about going into socialology (can't spell). I can feel that I can kinda read people (not their emotions, just their actions and kinda how they feel about something) and this might be something I may study and pursue (I'm not even in high school yet so it's a long ways away). I'm now lost on what I wanted to say here but I guess I'm asking, what's it like? What are the job options? What could I possibly do with my actions-thoughts thing? (I'm not trying to say I'm an expert in anything, I've just been thinking about it lately and I'm taking this opertunity to talk with someone in this field)

4 RepliesEdited by cool cake: 9/15/2016 5:17:50 AMWhat is your opinion on religion? Do you belive that some people can be more likely to follow a religion based on their brain's unique structure, or is it entirely based upon their upbringing and consious dicisions? What is your opinion on homosexuality and the like? Do you belive that it is a mental anomaly, or just a result of a person's past experiences? Sorry if these questions are a bit silly. :P

5 Replies1. Do you think psychology has enough rigour to be considered a science, or is it simply based on subjective opinion? 2. If you believe psychology is scientific, do you believe psychiatry is more or less scientifically rigorous (especially in the treatment of disorders)? 3. Do you [all/some] believe psychological issues are merely the manifestation of underlying biological/neurological catalysts? 4. Can psychiatrists replace psychotherapists?

I am not versed in psychology whatsoever, but I did spawn a question for you. Now, the answer may very well be dependent on the variables of the circumstance itself, but then again, they may not. Why are some people susceptible to believing in the theories that average people see as ludicrous or insane? Like the theory that all of our lives are contained within a simulation and we're all just programs. Or that you never know if what is actually happening in reality is even happening at all. That maybe your memories were planted there by something else, or you think your mind is creating this entire alternate universe that you seem to be living, day by day, when you should actually be awake, 1,000 year in the future coming out of cryo-stasis? Or maybe that nothing is even real at all, and you have absolutely no clue who you really are, what you really are, or why you're living on a place called earth, part of a race of intellectual beings called humans, and born to parents Lynda and Jon, who named you Billy. Like, some people full on believe this things as cold hard fact, and are indisputable. I think it's pretty interesting how they can lead themselves to believe things like that, and I wonder if it's just how they grew up that led them into that way of thinking, or maybe an early interest that just evolved with age. Hopefully I made the question clear enough to understand. If it's not in your area of expertise or does not pertain to psychology some how (I'm very tired right now and trying to muster this together with what physical and mental power I have left before collapsing to slumber), I apologize. Also, it's good to see that you've recovered and are getting an internship! While I'm not knowledge in psychology, studying the human mind has always seemed to intrigue me. Why people do things the way they do, why they think the way they do, or act. Sometimes at work, I'll literally pick a single individual every now and again and watch everything they do very closely, how they talk, they're gestures, attitude, appearance; everything I can in a short amount of time to just find out a little about them. Or see if I can at the very least. I usually do that when its a slow day and I'm bored as hell, but it's still interesting to process it all.
