I love how PlayStation doesn't show ping...
High latency can cause lag. One may "lag out" due to unacceptably high latency. Servers will often disconnect a client if the latency is too high and it poses a detriment to others' gameplay.
Here is a test from the Xbox Network Speed Test

You see how the ping is 61? That's due to distance, from Houston to Microsoft servers in Washington.
Here is speedtest done with a server nearby

You see how it's 21ms? Because the server is closer, because it's in the same state.
Distance matters, if you have satellite connection, it makes it horrible because the packet of data needs to travel a much larger distance, and if you live far away from the connection host, or if your ISP is just bad, it's honestly all on them to...
Ping is really important when it comes to online gaming, not just download and upload.
