As usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon! Stay classy, Guardians!
They walked through the doorway, and found themselves presented with another open door. This one opened into a long hallway, with more Guardian remains littered across the floor.
Sai nodded. “So, I guess we go this way?” he asked.
“Seems like it,” Omar said. He began to walk into the tunnel when Toland grabbed him.
“Wait!” the old Warlock said. He looked into the tunnel. “Look up!”
They did.
Hanging in the air above the tunnel was a strange, metal. . . thing. It looked like two giant spinning tops put together, end on end.
“What is it?” Eriana asked.
“A shrieker,” Toland said, narrowing his eyes. When the only response from the Guardians was to stare at him in confusion, he sighed. “I forget how little you know of the Hive,” he said. “A shrieker is a hive construct, built to defend certain Hive temples. Think of it like an automated turret; it shoots whatever enemies it sees.”
“Okay,” said Omar, “an automated turret. That’s probably the least craziest thing we’ve had to deal with today.”
“The shrieker’s internal structure is dead flesh animated by Hive arcana,” Toland continued. “Upon destruction, it releases a series of projectiles at it’s foes in it’s death throes.”
Omar sighed. “You just couldn’t leave it at ‘automated turret,’ could you?” he grumbled. “Alright, let’s just destroy it and get it over with.” He stepped out into the hallway, rocket launcher in hand.
“That won’t work,” Toland said.
Omar frowned. “Why not?” he asked.
“Shriekers only become vulnerable once they open to attack,” Toland said. “Otherwise, your shots will simply collide with the metal casing, doing no damage. The casing is engineered to deflect force, and hive arcana helps to keep it all together.”
“Is there no way through it?” Eriana asked.
“Well, there is,” Toland admitted. “It took quite a bit of experimentation, but -“ he shook his head. “Never mind. We don’t have the necessary materials.”
Eris nodded. “Okay,” she said. “How do we get it to open?”
“In my experience, Shriekers are usually triggered by proximity,” he said. “This one should be no different.” And with that, Toland stepped into the hallway.
The Guardians raised their weapons.
The shrieker remained inert.
“Hm,” Toland said, stroking his chin. “Odd.”
The Guardians lowered their weapons. “Maybe it’s turned off, or something like that,” Eris suggested.
Toland frowned. “Maybe,” he said. He began to walk down the hallway, keeping one green eye on the shrieker. The other Guardians slowly followed him.
When they were finally directly beneath the shrieker, Toland slammed into - well, nothing. It was like there was an invisible barrier in front of him. As he connected with the barrier, the shrieks of thrall filled the cavern, and the doors behind them began to close.
“No!” Omar shouted. He ran up to the doors, only to have them slam shut in his face. Just then, purple projectiles began to rain down on him, depleting his shields. Omar looked up, and saw that the two metal discs had opened, revealing a purple, translucent orb in between them, firing out void pellets at the Guardians below, even as they fought off the thrall.
The shrieker had awoken.
