Interesting. We'd still be trading in the entire console for an upgrade until they let us open the box ourselves; how would pricing work?

That's the big question, there's also the fact that all games would in theory need to work on the basic console therefore how much can they really upgrade it? Without alienating basic Xbox One users. The most interesting for me though is that it's a serious consideration, the console space could change drastically if MS take the lead on this.

  • I don't think comparing it to how we currently treat console game purchases is fair. They're bridging the gap between console and PC, a platform that is different from owner to owner. You may have to be mindful of system specs (to an extent) for consoles, too. I can vision it being less customization-oriented than PC, where hardware updates are pushed out down one path, rather than pick and choose what kind of things you may want. Game cases may display the recommended hardware update for optimal play. Developers can aim for lower specs if they want and as they need. I can guess console trades to update will require a small fee to cover the new parts; Microsoft would update the old console and sell it refurbished while new consoles are sold with the newest hardware and labeled appropriately (you can check if you're purchasing a new console that's been sitting on the shelf for awhile (it can have an older update). Consoles are ultimately aimed at convenience, so they can only go so far with how this change could possibly work. It'll be interesting to see how they accomplish this.
