The very existance of exotics isn't compatible with the task of balancing a game for pvp. Thorn is strong/OP for a number of reasons: - the only DOT you can apply unlimited times and super easy, meaning you can regenerate, they cannot and you can track them. - the AP-bullets can hit multiple targets, applying the DOT to all of them -bullet dmg and DOT dmg together come to 119, a super high value, coupled with the highest fire rate for HCs (except for TLW) - The dmg dropoff at higher ranges seems a LOT less for handcannons than for other weapons, they are effective at all practical ranges. My fix: less effective range, get rid of penetration, allow DOT to dmg health, but not finish off a target.

  • I suppose this is true, exotics are a nightmare for balance, but it's clear the Thorn is out of line in PvP (PvE I couldn't care less, we're all on the same team there). While I would agree with some of your ideas, I think it would be best to take a veryyy delicate approach and only make the DoT on shields change and observe from there. The uproar from learned Thorn users would be too much if all of those changes were implemented, I would think...

I believe the shitstorm coming from all thorn users after a nerf is the only reason why Bungie is so silent on the matter. But if Bungie cares about balance, then a nerf is inevitable. One of the good things about the crucible is that it isn't as twitchy as Call of Duty, time to kill is around 0.8-1 second with most primaries, ARs and scouts are slower and three (two for xbox) guns are significantly faster and all are handcannons. TTK is 0.26 for TLW with hip-firing, around 0.5 in reallife conditions. Thorn is 0.3-0.4. Hawkmoon has a 42% chance to two-shot. It's amazing that those weapon come through play-testing and even more amazing that the Halo-developers could come up with 'em. I've got a Monte Carlo two weeks ago and soooooo want to use it. But it's hopeless against the exotic handcannons. Mid-game I switch to Thorn/Hawkmoon or my Timepiece...

  • Agreed. I honestly have started celebrating being killed by MIDAs or Red Deaths or even legendary primaries just because it's almost a rarity when it feels like 80% of my deaths by primaries come from Thorn, The Last Word, or heaven forbid, the two-shot Hawkmoon. I don't necessarily want a nerf to Hand Cannons in general but starting with the Thorn and maybeee Hawkmoon couldn't hurt... The Last Word I consider as balanced for an exotic, I have my reasons. But I feel you there, I've been dying to try out my first Hard Light (I know, I know haha) but I feel like I just can't enjoy it in Trials or even some Crucible matches simply because it's always one step behind, say, the Thorn.

  • Same with the part about the last word. When I first got it, the stability was so low and the range so low that it equalized the weapon by making it harder to use
