"Latest" is sorted by most recently replied. "Trending" is a combination of rating and latest, favoring more recently created threads. It can often appear to look like latest, but tends to focus on topics people are upvoting as well as replying in. A sort by creation date is generally not relevant - it isn't where active discussion is happening, and in a forum as fast moving as this one, is often no different than noise.

I see, well that makes a lot of sense; thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm soon to graduate from an economics program so I am always working with proxies for this and that; I was thinking that "recently replied" would work as a proxy for "trending" and therefore not ideal to the latest list. Its interesting that you are essentially using a sample crowd's response, over some short exposure time, to tag those threads that are both recent and of interest from those that may be more recent but of little interest. I am glad you replied! Thanks.
