Antibiotic resistance

I recommend watching the video above, and it is my source.
The thoughtless person playing with penicillin treatment is morally responsible for the death of the man who succumbs to infection with the penicillin-resistant organism.
-Alexander Fleming, discoverer of penicillin The reason I made this thread is to alert people to the existence of resistant bacteria and to suggest that people avoid using antibiotics for trivial illnesses. Antibiotic resistance is when bacteria adapt to the medications with which we treat bacteria infection. This makes infection much more difficult to control unless a new antibiotic is created. The main reason antibiotic resistance is occurring is due to overuse of antibiotics ever since they were created. Patients, corporations, and doctors are all at fault for the overuse of antibiotics. The threats of resistant bacteria are numerous. Please watch the video for more information on any of these points and for statistical data. Though resistant bacteria are a threat, the woman in the video somewhat exaggerates. While many companies have ceased production of new antibiotics, some still do. In addition to this, more companies will attempt to develop new antibiotics when the demand for them goes up, which will occur if resistant bacteria become an imminent threat. Sorry I didn't give more info, I am somewhat tired/lazy. TL;DR: antibiotic resistance is a thing. Watch the video. Discussion is encouraged.

  • Yeah, we learned about this in my pre-pre-med class. Makes you wonder how many wrong options there are out there. Suppose all we can do find some shelter for the night. Good night. Good luck. wat

  • Truthfully I thought this was going to be a "this doesn't exist here's a bunch of random people proving its a conspiracy and everyone who disagrees is a corporate shrill" kind of thread. Glad to see I was wrong.

This is a big deal to me. I'm a pre-med student right now, and hope to become an osteopathic physician. The public image of doctors is that the patient shows up, tells the doc what's wrong, and walks over to the pharmacy and gets a bottle of magic that cures them. Because of this I am very interested in naturopathy, though in most states it's still a bogus degree iirc, so time will tell as to whether or not that is worth pursuing. What I do know is that diet, exercise, and good habits should all be worked on before drug prescriptions are given out... ...Of course what are you gonna do when little Joey's parents flip shit over him not getting magic pills to cure him? But I almost forgot! Praise Teixobactin!

          • Unfortunately, since I am a diabetic. My immune system is weakened so any trivial illness beside the common cold or the flu, I have to treat with anti-biotics. At least, that's what most medical teams tell me.

            • Doctor tried to give me amoxacilln(sp?) for acne when I was younger. I already knew about this issue from an awesome high school teacher. I asked the doctor what was wrong with him. He smiled and said I was smart and gave me some shitty face cream.

            • Just picked up my antibiotics this morning after getting between my dogs fighting last night so this was a fun watch lol. I've been on the same antibiotic at least 3 times this year alone. My father knowing about medicine has helped me not take them unless I need them though so maybe I won't lose my arm

              • I've experienced this first hand. I've had a health problem and the doctors have prescribed me 4 different antibiotics before finding out what the actual problem is. If I need to use antibiotics that's fine, but my body doesnt respond to them very well. And the 4 antibiotics that I did take did crap. I definitely would appreciate more doctors getting to the root of the problem over taking the easy way out by prescribing antibiotics that they aren't even sure will work.
