Spring car projects - UPDATED 5/21

Well, it's that time of year that everyone is pulling their garage queens out of storage, and the rest of us are doing what we can to our daily drivers to make them a little more fun. What are you doing or planning on doing to yours? Last night my youngest son and I installed this Airaid CAI into the Focus I bought in August. It's been a decent car, but I always am looking for more in cost effective means. Any of you not familiar with a CAI, it is a Cold Air Intake. It is basically replacing your car's OEM air box and filter with an open filter system, sometimes that is even remotely located outside the engine bay and into the front fender. The application to get more air into the combustion system, making more power. I've installed a few over the years in various cars, and this will always be an upgrade I would recommend to anyone looking for a little more out of what they already have. It adds a few more Hp, as well as foot pounds of torque, but it also slightly increases your mpg. This particular model is a dry filter, and adds 10 Hp, 12 Ft/lb of torque. Depending on the brand, model, and design these numbers can vary, and in certain applications increase both Hp and torque up to 27-30. It's like free power form a permanent install. The filter never gets replaced like a paper filter, but only cleaned every 10,000 miles. Since putting this in last night, the little 2.0 - 4 banger went from decent and quiet to a little meaner and it now has a throaty growl when you are into the throttle. That's just from more air input. I'll have to get used to the growl for it just doesn't seem fitting to the car's demeanor. Another side effect is it has already increased the mpg by .7. I'll keep tabs on it and see if that varies or increases, but in less than 30 miles it has improved there and that is not from any lack of having my foot in it, because I'm having fun with it.

    Been awhile since I made progress but rear subframe is done! New poly bushings are in and new brake calipers rotors and stainless steel lines are in. Also installed a bigger rear sway bar and new struts with tein lowering springs.Now the "fun" stuff" will being. Engine and trans comes out and will be swapped to a more powerful engine and swapped to a manual.

  • Progress today! The entire sub frame is off. I couldn't get two of the bolts off the passenger side hub nor could my dad. The long bolts through the hub are also stuck in both sides. Going to see if the shop can get them out and the hub bolts too. I'm also going to have them press out the old bushings and press in the new ones.

      Update for me!!! Started working on the celicas entire rear suspension and brakes. Got the old strut off and braking components. Also trying to take off the entire subframe. I'm replacing everything. The brakes and struts will be easy but I'm also replacing all the bushings with polyurethane ones. I have to take off the entire subframe for that. I finished today with two bolts stuck on the hub I can't get our. Soaked them in pb blaster and hopefully I can get them out tomorrow. Even though things took me awhile I'm proud of myself as I'm doing the majority of this by myself without much help from my brother or dad.

      • Well I don't have a car myself yet but my dad got a 2010 V6 Mustang and he is going to get a tuner,CAI, and Pypes dual exhaust system along with some quarter window louvers and maybe a hood scoop but I'm going to help him with all those

        • Bout to change the wiper blades on the obs. If anyone else is looking to buy new blades I highly recommend PIAA super silicone blades. They're a bit pricey but they work fantastically.

          • Just an update on this since it has had a few weeks of use;
it has already increased the mpg by .7. I'll keep tabs on it and see if that varies or increases
Well, it did. My average was 26.3 MPG prior to install. In the past 5 or so weeks of daily use it is now solidly at 30.5 MPG. (I do little to no highway driving) So once again to any of you who are somewhat into your car and/or would like to get more out of yours performance and MPG wise, if you don't already have something like this in your car I would HIGHLY recommend getting one. Granted the initial expense can be a bit much if you're not accustomed to tuner parts and such, but these things last the life of the car. Simply putting a K&N filter in your stock air box may seem like a viable alternative, but I can tell you from experience that they do not unlock all the rest of what you can get out of your engine that this type of mod will give you. I've tried both in the '01 Cobra I had previously. The CAI made a much more substantial gain than the K&N stock filter replacement did in both power, fuel economy, as well as throttle response and engine sound. If you do get one, find one from a reputable company that specializes in these. Do NOT get a Chinese knock off from some "Performance Parts Warehouse" on eBay. I did that too, on my son's Taurus and nephew's Accord. They worked, but both were a hodge-podge, mis-fitting make some of the parts yourself ordeal.

                  • Installed my Vitesse Throttle Controller today I never really fully realized how sluggish the stock throttle response was till I put my throttle controller at SP9, holy crap the throttle response is instant and violent now. I love it, well worth the $100.

                  • My Jetta is going to be getting a brand new suspension soon. I'm also going to be getting new rotors and high performance brake pads as well as high temperature brake fluid so the brakes can handle a few track days. Of course, I need to get my CBR600F4 in tip top shape before doing any of this.

                        Subaru will hopefully get new front seats this weekend. I would of had them in yesterday but the seller accidentally sent me seats from an 06 mustang. After that I'll either have the rear seats recovered or buy some new ones depending on price. I'm really loving my subaru though. Porsche might get new brakes if I can afford it. And hopefully I'll start my engine swap soon.

                      • Putting new rims on my '15 WRX. Need a set for summers and winter tires so I don't keep de-rimming every season. Also, I'm debating getting the Turboback exhaust and tune. But my warranty....
