Fallen Origins Theory

Throughout the beta, the Fallen were the primary antagonist in regards to time spent fighting them. This led to a lot of exposure to small details that led me to a theory about how the Fallen "fell". The first theme I came across was the heavy integration of technology into the Fallen. The skanks, Devil Walkers, and Servitor are all completely mechanical ranks in the Fallen army. I also noticed that during the city missions in old Russia, many were based on collecting one of many items from the Fallen, and almost all were described as some sort of mechanical body augmentation that helped the biological Fallen fight or stay alive. This kind of reliance on technology contrasts severely with the other characteristics of the Fallen. For example, the house banners suggest a noble lineage and gives the Fallen, or some past version of them, a honorable purist tone. The swords that are commonly wielded by captains and stealth vandals also point to a more primitive yet civilized Fallen. So why do we see both of these characteristics in the same species? Cue in the most obvious clue, their name "Fallen". Imagine, in the distant or near past, a Fallen race that was similar to our conception of noble pirates (or wolves?), not explicitly technologically advanced, extremely loyal to their House (House of Devils, House of Wolves, House of Exiles) and based from their ships instead of a specific physical location. These past Fallen would then have experience some event, or the Fall (similarities to the fall of man out of the old testament) and that would have pushed them to embrace technology to survive, if only as slaves to it. I got this idea after seeing the fallen praying to the exalted Servitor, Sepiks Prime, and what appeared to be their souls (visually similar to Bungie's description of Fallen headshot resulting in their souls being ripped from their bodies) being sucked into the machine god as tribute. This theory might also explain why the Fallen are so keen to scavenge technology and intelligence from our colonies. The only theory I have for the event triggering the Fall is some sort of evil force infecting Fallen and turning them into Hive Thrall (reference Killworthy's earlier theory on Hive origins) and the Fallen allowing technology to enslave them to avoid extinction. Sorry for it being so long and thanks to those who read it all. Please comment with any ideas supporting or disproving my theory, it is by no means complete and needs some work!

  • So far this sounds like a pretty valid theory.

  • I like the theory Justin from my point of view the way Id envision the Fallen before they fell would be similar to the Nietzscheans from Andromeda lore http://andromeda.wikia.com/wiki/Nietzschean not from a evolutionary aspect but from societal aspect and maybe either contact with the darkness or the travaler changed them into their current form and I do also believe that the Hive and Fallen share sum history with eachother maybe the Hive was a disgraced/outcast Noble House that either gave into the darkness to gain a edge on the other houses or was completely consumed by it by a series of events not of their own making.

The Hive have a completely different mythos than the Fallen. There is no way they are related. The Hive are not an infection, they are fantasy undead. I would describe them as space liches, not space zombies.
