I made a topic earlier presenting my idea how to keep the old raids relevant without harming the game in any way, and I asked if you guys have any ideas to do this. (link: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/98805950/0/0) In this post I want to present what I now think would be the best thing Bungie could (and should) do when HoW drops, in order to keep the old raids (loot) relevant. There are a few things that need to be taken into account. First of all the raids are increasing in difficulty every time one comes out (if only for the level they are at). Loot should be dropped according to the difficulty. Also each seperate raid should be a stepping stone for new players to prepare for the next one (vendor gear being better than VoG unfortunately broke this rule, but Bungie says they won't make this mistake again. If it was up to me they should bring the vendor gear down to 27 light again, so they are the required step for new players before they do VoG). And last of all, even though fun is the most important, drops for raids should be rewarding due to the time you put in (this also makes it even more fun :D), so not just containers of shards and energies. I have a suggestion which would make sure the raids stay relevant for both new and old players! I think loot from old raids should be upgradeable to the newest levelcap. However, since we still want the newest raid to be the only way to provide for the highest levels they should put a forging system in place. You would go to an npc in the tower with a piece from the raid you want upgraded, but also the same type of gear from the newest raid (so boots and boots etc., to forge them together into an upgraded version of the old raidgear, this can also require any of the existing currency e.g. vanguard commendations or motes of light (like upgrading old exotics with glimmer). In this way you still have to collect loot from the newest raid to reach the highest level, but ambitious players can grind to have three different sets of top level gear (at least there would be some variation in the tower!). I think putting this forging system in place would not harm the game in any way, since the new players would still need to go through all the content to reach the highest level. But lots of players would like to see a system where they can still use their vintage gear from time to time too! Not only would VoG gear be usefull for vex strikes, and CE for hive, but also allows you to look badass and more unique at the same time. Something similar could also be done for weapons. I havent given it as much thought but I think the same type of system could work. I'm curious to see wether you agree, and would like to use some of your favourite old gear again, or whether you disagree and like to see the VoG gear forever lost in the dark corners of time.
