Define "earning" in Destiny

RNGesus gives it to you

Xúr, Iron Banner

Everyone that says they have "earned" their weapons and armor, what is "earning it"? Is it getting lucky by RNGesus, like by the nightfall, engrams, or chest drops? Or is it grinding your ass off in the weekly heroic every week for those coins to exchange to Xúr, or grinding that rep in Iron Banner? In my own opinion, I think its based more off of grinding it. There is no real earning accomplishment unless you grinded for it.
For example, before the dlc rolled out, I got my lv 30 because of Iron Banner's lv 30 armor. I got kicked from a hard VoG because someone said I took the easy way. But was that entire weeks worth of grinding really the easy way?
Edit: Just because you bought the game doesn't mean you deserve every item in the game immediately, so buying the game is not earning your gear in the game. Sorry Edit 2: Forgot about exotic bounties, but that would go under Xúr and iron banner because you work towards a specific goal.

 • I'd like to know what the op is reaching for here. Are we discussing the meaning of earn, earn the right to, earned, or what constitutes earning? Are we discerning, or separating the feeling or inclusion of deserve in the meaning of earn? Each of these can have diverse vagaries in definition versus spirit of the meaning. For example, I earn money at work. So I earned, worked for or towards, my salary. I buy a house with my earned money. Some would say I earned my house because when earning the money I had the goal in mind I was working towards that goal. Hence, I earned my house (in the spirit of earning). My son got straights As. I promised if he earned straight As he'd earn the right to buy Destiny. He bought destiny ( with my money) but earned the right to it. So in essence, every way it is possible to obtain something in this game, is a way of earning it. In grinding at strikes, in hopes to get ________. Finally I get it, so I earned it, because that is what I was working towards. I earned strange coins, or glimmer, or notes, and bought ____________ from Xur. I earned it, because that is in the spirit of earning. I bought this game, and earned the right to enjoy it. And if getting an item through bounty, rng, or Xur is what I want to do, I've earned that right to do so. And deserve so as well. As do we all.
