the same thing happened to me :(... i think if is the same exotic, the option to make the upgrade shouldn't be available... i just did that because i thought "if the option is available, then will have improvements"

The same thing happened to me. I got Invective from the "A Dubious Task" Missive, and have spent the last couple weeks upgrading it. I stopped by Xur today, and saw it as an upgradable weapon. So, I bought my shard and spent the 7000 glimmer to finish the upgrades, and... POOF! Invective is now back to 0 XP, and I'm out 7000 Glimmer, 7 Strange Coins, and about 100,000 accumulated experience. I wouldn't have such a problem with it if the game made ANY mention of what the upgrade process entails. I see previous posts that state its only if you have a maxed item and want to boost it to Dark Below level, but there is nothing in the shop that explains this.

That's great, but the values were the same for me since I got it after The Dark Below launched. And there is no mention that it will remove all unlocked upgrades currently on the weapon. OR any mention that the upgrade process is just for pre-DLC gear.

Why would I think anything different of the same upgrade tree? Same stats? I'm betting that most players who lost out on this didn't even view the details because if the weapon is the same, why would you? There is no real reason to unless you knew ahead of time from looking in the forums. This is not a "buyer beware" situation, it's a video game, and the only reason there isn't a better/more helpful UI is because the people who made the game didn't feel it was important enough to actually explain the options the game has to offer within the game itself. It is either oversight, laziness, or apathy towards the player base, and none of those are acceptable reasons when releasing a triple-A title.

Your cynicism aside, I do agree that players should look into their items. However, when I got my first exotic item, there was a pop up that told me I could only equip one piece at a time. So how hard would it have been to do the same for the upgrade menu? Or, even better, code a check into the upgrade system that works by not letting you buy the upgrade if you already have the most current version of the weapon? It seems the devs have intentionally left this way to waste time and resources open.

No, some people like re-rolling their stats if they find the upgraded version has higher values. There's a notification for trying to equip another exotic because you can't equip more than one.
