State Of The Union address?
Can someone give me a rundown of what happened for the State of the Union address tonight? I was working and missed the whole thing, don't have time to watch it now. Thank you to anyone who answers this seriously.

2 RepliesBasically issued two veto threats, introduced favorable policies for the Democrats (Republicans liked as well) but never said how he'd go about making them happen. He did a lot of 'one nation' talking and installing the mentality of working together. Oh, and I laughed out loud when he mentioned his number of terms. [quote]I have no more terms to run. *Republican applause* I would know, I won both of them.[/quote] He went there. XD

3 RepliesIt was shorter than I thought it would be, ended like 70 minutes in. I thought one of the bigger things was the 'free community collage' legislation that obama's advocating, though I doubt it'll get through the senate w/o being bastardized. He touched on the normalization of relations w/ cuba a bit, and that congress should work on ending the embargo. He said 'Nothing poses a larger threat to future generations' about climate change, and addressed some of the fox news anti-climate change redirect. He brought up wanting to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill putting millions to work(reminded me of a smaller scale WPA). Unemployment is down, jobs are being created in new sectors, we're doing good in comparison w/ 2008. He advocated for higher taxes on capital gains. Wasn't discussed in depth but it would be for people making +500k a year, and would raise from 23% to 28% on capital gains. Also brought up taxing accumulated wealth. Talked about incentives to get to mars. Introduced 'Allen Groves', who will spend a year in space(the ISS I assume) to collect data for a mars mission. Brought up US's solidarity w/ the rest of the world against terrorism and ISIS. He said he would prohibit the use of any torture(didn't say advanced interrogation so idk) and that he's still going to close Guantanamo Bay. Those were the big things I noticed. Also, the official republican response was that of vapid non-information and meaningless drivel.

1 ReplyI was sad he no longer cites Yemen as a success story with respect to airstrikes. That was comedy gold back in September and would've been even funnier today given events at the presidential palace in Sana'a

I only caught the tail end of it because I had class - which amounted to the obligatory "People say we have problems, and we do, but we gotta work together to solve those problems, okay guys? Good? Okay, bye." I'll probably look into the important bits tomorrow.
