September 1st 1939, or if you want to be very specific, late August 31, 1939 as German troops snuck into Polish border stations to take them over. If you want to go even further back, than I guess technically the Japanese invasion of Manchuria can kind of be seen as a turning point, but Poland is most certainly the more correct/accepted date.
