I had to look him up, but seeing as he was the founder of the SAS, a pretty awesome guy. British commando raids during World War 2 are very fascinating to read about, those guys were all over the place. If you are interested in them you should check out the LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) guys that ran around North Africa and raided Axis air fields and such. There is a great book from the perspective of one of those guys called "Killing Rommel".

The best book about the SAS in North Africa is the phantom major. It's about Stirling from the beginning when he broke into the British command on crutches with an injured leg. His escapes from Italian pow camps. Various raids. It shows what a few men, determination and a few tons of plastic explosive can do.
