1, I knew you knew. 2, the nine are a races, well the 5 race in the game , we only met one of them (xür), and never a ship, so naturally it would make sense for it to be a nine ship. 3, The grimoire card says nine are a group of survivors, blah blah blah, also stating they are what was, is, isnt, and whats left to be, the nine are everything that was or isnt..
Alright, I'm going to attempt to answer this (and your friend's relpy) as to what we know of the nine. I speak as a member of a group that buries themselves within the lore to know it all, a go to source once the story actually fleshes out. Please, move this thread to #Destiny. If you need help, say so. The Nine are not a race. The fifth 'race' in that picture is what we speculate to be a physical manifestation of "The Darkness" or just long forgotten concept art. Xûr is not one of the nine, rather, he is controlled by them. He is even happy to be trading the exotics away from the Nine's possession. The grimoire your friend references about "a group of survivors" is quite a strange one. We believe it to be one of two possibilities: A) there is 9 paragraphs, one for each member B) there is more than 9 members, and the grimoire is a vague attempt to define them. The Nine is a collection of intellectual life forms or forces. They act as a metaphysical Gamemaker in Destiny, a kind of illuminati. The Queen of the Reef has active communication with the Nine, and offers a gift from the Prison of Elders to stay in their graces. The Nine will provide the major story turning point in future Destiny games. The Speaker questions why they do not help, Xûr speaks that they will come to see the end, and everything else we know of them is 2spoopy4me. TL;DR They are basically Destiny illuminati, not much is know about them. As far as game application goes, we will need them to defeat the darkness. The problem is, they have motives of their own that goes beyond our comprehension.

You speculated, not know. That is the beauty in lore theories, I can respect what your group thinks but in all honesty, destiny doesnt varie much from the mass effect series, the nine (darkness, intellectual beings) you talk about doesnt seem much different from reapers, who in which are recognized as a race, despite there being different variants of reapers they are still reapers, the nine are recognized as the nine, (a race). And along with your thought on the relationships between races and "the nine" it honestly doesnt change much for what the nine are, They are what is, isnt, whats to be and whats happened. Not everything has to be so far looked into, sometimes somethings are in front of you. Now if I was to know people put so much time into looking into things id make the answer obvious.

  • The card is just empty theories. That's the point of the card. No one knows.
