This man figured it out.

So I was browsing reddit like I usually do in my free time specifically for things about games I play when I stumbled upon this. I read this and realized that he is extremely right. Bungie should take this guys advice because this is the difference between a good game and a GREAT game: http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2q3dud/while_playing_halo_reach_it_all_hit_me_what_is/ Edit #1: Hey guys thanks for all the amazing feedback. Also wanted to say that with the first cut scene on mars when humans first landed was a excellent display of what Bungie is capable of we just need more of that great story telling ability they show far to little of. Edit #2: Its me again fellow guardians. Thank you so much. You guys made this a trending topic for all to see. To all who are reading this if you don't comment, give it a like or a bump. Secondly I take no credit for this reddit post all credibility goes to the original author I'm just the messenger. Stay Frosty Guardians.

With regards to Russia, the cosmodrome was a spaceport, not a civilian populated area, which is no doubt why you saw no houses - and the idea is that humanity has completely retreated to the last city But yes, there's still an emotional element missing from destiny that would help you identify with the characters and their motivations
