You lost me Bungie.

Sorry guys. I'm getting off the hamster wheel. I don't like the goalposts being moved. Let me start off by saying I loved this game, and I probably will be back, someday. But for now the game feels like a chore. I got Destiny at launch, and grew as a Guardian. It took me three months, the iron banner for a pair of boots, but I finally got to lvl 30. I was starting to a mass a decent collection of exotics. I was hooked. Then the dark below launched and all this gear I'd grinded for months was completely worthless. Undeterred, I began lvling vanguard gear and preparing for the new raid. I reset my prized thorn and started leveling it back up to something worthwhile. But then something happened. I looked at my character. And a random at the tower. And then a friends. We're all wearing the same gear now. My character, my sense of progression, my story, my alts identity, was now cookie cutter. Generic. Bland. I never noticed it before, but we all were wearing the same gear before too; mostly VOG raid armor with one individualized exotic. The thought of grinding for the next month or two or three, simply to get back to the place I just grinded and fought to get to for the last three months doesn't seem like much fun now. The prospect that I'll spend a month, maybe two, then the new expansion ships and all of this happens again... This isn't what I call "fun." I don't know how to fix this problem. It all stems from the fact that gear = levels. I hope you all can realize that these things are problems with your design and find ways to mitigate them. I'll be following and hope you change these things. But for now, this hamster is getting off the grind wheel. I'm not angry, I've played this game for over 200 hours. That's about 40 cents an hour for what I spent on the game and season pass. That's an excellent rate for entertainment. Like I said, I may even be back someday, especially if these problems are addressed. Anyway, that's my two cents. I'm sure the trolls are on their way to comment and rage as you read this. But I hope I'm not the only one sad and leaving because of the direction this game is going. Because if this is the direction videogames are going, I'm not going to be playing them in five years. I grind enough in my life; I call it work. When I get home, I want to play. *edit* I originally quoted 80 hours. After thinking about it, I figured that was only on one character. I checked and had over 120 hours played on my Titan. I updated the post accordingly. I want to thank everyone for their support, comments, and/or insights. I never expected to get this much feedback, and certainly not a response from Bungie/DeeJ. Merry Christmas! #exotics #progression #expansion #burntout #grinding

There is much that needs to be done to essentially save this slowly sinking ship. Changing how progression works is definitely one - but primarily Bungie needs to acknowledge and interact more frequently with their fanbase.
For twenty years, This sailor has stood the watch While some of us were in our bunks at night, This sailor stood the watch While some of us were in school learning our trade, This shipmate stood the watch Yes . . . even before some of us were born into this world, This shipmate stood the watch In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history, This shipmate stood the watch Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there, Needing his guidance and help, Needing that hand to hold during those hard times, But he still stood the watch He stood the watch for twenty years, He stood the watch so that we, our families, And our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night, Knowing that a sailor stood the watch Today we are here to say: "Shipmate . . . the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those YOU have trained, guided, and lead Shipmate you stand relieved . . . we have the watch!" "Boatswain . . . Standby to pipe the side . . . Shipmate's going Ashore!"
I felt this would be slightly appropriate for a fellow Guardian hanging up their guns for the time being. Just replace details when applicable.

    • Same here, I like destiny, have over 500 hours now.. but the release of the dlc broke it for me. I finally got the vog helmet and vex legally.. no cheesing.. got some great gear by playing a lot. And I loved playing this way.. even went as far as getting a character of all 3 classes since I got the gear for the other classes anyway with this random item drop crap. Then the dlc came out.. first I was hyped.. then after the first week.. look at my friend list.. see so many people who don't even play much or can't even hold a relic in the raid buying higher level stuff and getting dlc gear and weapons by running the first chest in crota's end? Get invites to kill crota only while they cannot even get past the lamp section? So almost everyone having crotas end nametag from beating crota only.. but getting killed at the first lamp at the start? People don't even play together anymore.. they just try to jump in a random group to get gear/loot/materials. Playing a strike just for fun with randoms is impossible because they all just run past all the enemies to get to the end as fast as possible.. because.. yes.. they have this bounty running to do a strike without dying, or kill the endboss only. And what's up with those bounties anyway.. how can they still be the same over and over again.. how hard is it to add even more variety.. the gameworld is big enough. So it took me over 500 hours to realize this.. I'm putting down my controller.. don't care anymore about the raid.. as it is hard enough to get a steady group together. And then all this starts all over again with house of wolves? It's a holiday season and they summed it up themselves.. new people getting destiny for christmas.. and they can all just buy their way into lvl 31.. never ever having to face the vex in the vog. Great way of keeping your biggest fans Bungie..

I'm similarly disillusioned with the game. I was hoping for more customisation and find that all I can do is attempt to RNG a shader from a faction to make the raid gear I fluked look different to ever other person wearing the same raid gear. Notice I say attempt as I still haven't seen one despite wearing a dead orbit class item over 3 characters for most of the time I've played. After playing over 200 hours and getting disappointed repeatedly with RNG and the lack of customisation I think I'm going to shelve this game. One thing that continuously upset me is when I'd play crucible like a total boss I'd get no good loots for it. Then one game I stop to change a nappy, literally afk, and I finished with a god awful score I got patience and time. If deej and the team start making changes so that we can become more individual and actually create our destiny with hard work, not RNG, i may return. One idea would be allowed faction level to upgrade a vendors stock. Another would be to have good crucible players get good loots. You could still give useless players good loots via RNG.

      • So, DeeJ... What exactly is Bungie's plan to prevent this from happening again? Will all of our gear be obsolete again with the next DLC? Or is there something better planned for the future?

      • There's quite a few things that have happened since the dark below was released that make me not even want to play! The final straw is that while I sit here and watch my friends list of ppl that are on destiny playing as we speak, I cannot even log in... For a game to have been out for 4 months and they can't seem or don't want to fix their servers, I say that's rediculous! Maybe bungie should start firing some of their staff and hire ppl that can actually do their job and fix the gd servers! I've been waiting thru these attacks for 4 days now to play while I'm on my Xmas vacation, and just to be left out in the cold because bungie refuses to fix their problems! Staring at a black screen with error code banjo telling me I lost connection to te servers everytime I just try to log into the game for days now while my friends are on earth or Venus playing is not my idea of fun! Not to mention there were things I needed from xur but can't get them because bungie can't fix the servers is rediculous! Since I payed 60 plus expansion costs and tax to stare at a -blam!-ing black screen feeling left out, how about you give me my -blam!-ing money back and I'll send your piece of shit game back to you with first class shipping only it will be in pieces cause at least then you know upon opening it that you can't play the piece of shit! -blam!- you bungie, you have lost me as a fan! What's sad is destiny could have been epic, could have been; now when ppl bring up your game in a conversation it will be lagged at as a -blam!-ing disaster and moved on from discussion wise! Great job assholes!

      • This is exactly how I feel now. I always stood up for the game while humorously cracking on it's mistakes like friends do each other. But I think I'm mostly done with Destiny. I will log on for the HoW DLC bc I have the season pass, but after I buy the vendor gear and beat the Raid once.... well, that's where most of us are at right now. I think I'll sit D2 out also. Here's hoping The Division meets the hype.

        • This is the model for every loot based game. WoW, Diablo, Borderlands, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. There is always "the best" set of gear that you grind for. Once the DLC comes out there is a new set. That's just how it happens.

            • Im starting to think the same as you, especially after grinding my ass off for exotic bounties and the next step having to see xur and boom, wait till weekend and psn is down. I had christmas all planned out to relax and finish my bounties and rank reps up with factions but thats been ruined because off twats and their computer hacking boring skills. More protection needs putting in place. And weapons already grinded to the max need to stay up to date with dlc's.

Agree totally!!! Bump! I just threw In the towel last week, will look on and see how things evolve but for now - I'm done grinding, running as you said - in the hamster wheel. there isn't enough content, story, decent patrol missions to keep it alive. Not to mention that none of us have ever seen a woman or child, no village, no city - nothing. Destiny in short is a FPS game with pokeman cards, was fun for awhile but now it's just the same exact routine over and over again. Also there is no humanity in Destiny!! There is the speaker and the traveler and they tell us to go forth and slaughter - but not once did any of us see in the campaign or throughout the game any fallen, cabal, hive, vex killing innocent women and children. Nor have we seen any villages, innocent people asking for our help, no towns - no nothing. I got tired of it myself and have only played for 2 months, sorry but I am tired of broken promises - I traded Destiny in for Shadows of Mordor. There's 4 times more content in Shadows of Mordor, people you save, combat is fluid and the mechanics are great - I feel like I am fighting for a reason. In Destiny at the end, it was just a game - how many cabal, vex, hive or fallen can you kill. A grind to get the best armor and weapons and you know what I don't care what weapon you give me as long as it works. However what does mean a lot to me, is what I am playing, is there a reason other than getting through another strike. I would consider coming back if Bungie fixes this, but not until they do. I have no intention in funding what is going on with Destiny at the moment, it's not what I am looking for. Also, perhaps if they are going to be a FPS with a vague idea of a story and rely on pokeman cards to tell their story - then perhaps they need to be more honest about that.

            • Sir, your post expresses the exact way I feel right now, which is why I only play with friends, and in the crucible, now. The grind has killed my enjoyment of this game. Fantastic post.

            • I could not agree more with this post, I known I've posted similar comments before but I will say it again. Destiny is an enigma. It's a love- hate relationship to be sure. My relationship with Destiny is like that of an abused spouse, and when the cops come around and ask, "where did you get that black eye", I say he didn't mean it officer and he still loves me.....and I keep coming back for more and more abuse. I love Destiny for its extremely good gun-play and combat mechanics, the raids are complex and challenging - This is why I keep coming back. But to render ALL of the gear I so painfully grind-ed for and collected obsolete, is bordering on unforgivable. And to top it off the mechanisms to obtain all new gear and guns is so ridiculously time-consuming and frustrating, that it makes you wonder WTF are these guys at Bungie were thinking. And the answer is....This game has woefully insufficient content to keep gamers playing for any length of time - so Bungie has to put all these artificial constraints and speed limits on progression to make the game appear to have more content than it actually has. Anyone that falls for this needs to be checked for the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that all us gamers apparently have.

              • Just funny... Deej replies to you, but not the rest of us that put hundreds of hours and have even MORE to gripe about... http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/86248468/0/0/1 We grinded VoG to hit 30 over, and over, and over... many of us just ran it again and again to help others getting nothing as a reward. DLC releases and all our work goes down the drain. I can't argue that your points were more valid, but the fact the sole commenter for Bungie replied to your post and not any of ours was another slap to the face. Worse still by the fact he remained silent for the last few weeks outside of inane updates that were not updates.

                • The only answer to this problem is to do away with cap increases when DLC launches. That way everybody can use their precious fatebringer for the next 10 years and don't have to level new Armor. So by doing this you may as well do away with new weapons and gear with new DLC. Unless you want all your drops for the next 10 years to only be as good as what you already have. So if you do that you may as well do away with specific weapons. Just go to assault rifle, battle rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher and for fun and arguments sake let's throw in a needler. Ok. So that's done. Congratulations. You waited till 2014 to buy the cross platform version of Halo. Now this all being said, if I can't get recon I'm gonna be pissed bungie. Who wants to go back to paying $20 for dlc that is nothing but 3 new multiplayer maps.
