Been trying for honestly 3 hours re-running first part of the Fist of Crota mission and still not gotten it. Am I just really unlucky?

Just keep doing what you're doing. You will get it. It's RNG. Don't give up. It took my buddy 2 hours, me 1 hour, and another friend 10 min.

I was out killing Sword Knights in patrol and 4 of us were fighting to kill one guy and I almost killed him but the guy who stole the kill got the gun!!

Just keep doing eye of Crota mission over and over its fast

It is still an RNG thing so unfortunately you're susceptible to the numbers.
