I think they partnered with the wrong publisher. Activision is a greedy company. Bungie may have chose them because they knew Activision had the money to fund Destiny, it's always-on servers, its astronomical development cost (present and future), everything. But Activision is really only concerned with money. Call of Duty being the perfect example. A rehashed bulletfest every year that only changes in title and story (but even that is subject to similarity). Part of why Destiny may have changed in the past while is Joe Staten (writer of Halo, writer of "original" Destiny) left under unknown circumstances. 2 rumored reasons as to why he left have surfaced. 1. His creativity was stifled and his vision was killed and cut up. Him leaving prevented Activision from keeping his intellectual property of the "original" story and making money off it without paying him (which Activision would try to keep every penny they could.) 2. The original story that was play-tested behind closed doors and under an NDA (which the reddit poster claims to have been part of) was spoken against claiming it was too "Halo-like" and wasn't original/unique enough. He chose to discontinue work and left to do other things considering the rest of Bungie was already under contract to produce Destiny for atleast 10 years. Also, other members of Bungie have left under unknown circumstances and places have been filled or redacted. The true reasons behind why Destiny is not what we saw last year is hidden behind NDAs and locked deep on Bungie's vault of secrets. Until someone from Bungie (current or ex) says anything (and can prove it because it is the internet after all, liars are rampant), we will never know. And I doubt someone would say because of NDAs. Someone would get fired and/or sued for breach of contract.

  • WoW's raid designer actually works for/with Bungie. He does raids among a few other things. I'm not sure why they don't help each other other than that they each want little competition even though each game is totally different. And that Activision may not want competition for its CoD franchise (like someone posted below.

  • Good post from the OP. The feeling he describes reflect my very own experience with Bungie/destiny atm. To add to your comment I'll put theory #3 : The original game was too good and might have gripped somewhat the COD annual business plan. I have not bought a COD franchise game since black ops. If I end up buying advanced warfare, it will be as a preowned game in a few months, and not from a major game shop. The reason being I am curious about K.Spacey digital performance :) Oh deej while you're at it, can you tell the community on what grounds Marty O'Donnel was sacked ? Several settlements have been reached at the court, both in his favour if I am to believe the internet. Would it be damaging for the already quite tarnished Bungie image ti know what was the beef ? Sorry I am digressing even more, but will there be an explanation on why, concerning the TDB add-on, there were separate playlists for pvp but not for pve ? As daily missions using the DLC maps estrange players on more than a weekly basis, I am also curious to know if it is a technical issue or a business promotion plan. Have a nice day.

  • The only CoD game I ever bought was Black Ops 2 and that was only so I could play Zombies with my friends. Zombie addicts. All of the rest of the CoDs I've played have been borrowed or gifts. Got ghosts last Christmas. Will probably get AW this Christmas. And I'll buy the dlc for it because they are adding Zombies in, but that's the only reason. It's all the same really and that's why I love Destiny so much. It has a similar feel to a lot of shooters but bring so much uniqueness to the table. You may be right, Activision may have felt a little threatened by Destiny's potential and tried to dumb it down to keep CoD sales high. It's a reason that has crossed my mind as well. And if that's the case, then they killed their own investment which could've been very huge for them. Activision could've put down $500 million and walked away with 30-50x that amount by the end of the "10 year plan".

Like you, and probably like many other gamers, I like Destiny a lot. In spite of all its flaws it still is a very, very entertaining game. In fact there is nothing out there I can compare it to. Maybe The Division, when it's out. We'll see. The thing is, we'll probably never know what happened to the developpment of Destiny. And you are right to put the Activision theory in perspective. There is no way the editor would shoot itself in the foot when trying to launch a new franchise, especially since it enables them to cather to even more players of the shooter genre. Truce be told, I don't believe that the editor would take such a huge risk. No game can be too good when launching a new franchise. Something happened, and it's got to be on Bungie's side... Staten and O'Donnell, leaving one way or the other the same year before the release date ? Like I said we'll never learn anything. Sure thing is I'll wait patiently when the next game is shipped.

  • I'm glad you pointed out Activision. I feel they are the root of Destiny's problems. You've heard about the "copy and paste", right?
