Yes, the historical Jesus did exist, there is not question of that. He is the most attested to figure of that era, according to evidence. A better question would to be to ask "Who was the historical Jesus?" This is the question on which Christianity holds it's faith. It is the question historians and archeologists, having been trying to answer for decades, whether faithful or not.
