Can you explain the commendation system? The marks system seems to be the way to go personally???

Basically it's like this you have to rank up a faction(dead orbit, vanguard, crucible, etc) to purchase a helmet, chest, or weapons. Each rank up only gives one though. It can take a whole week to get even one rank.
