solution to strike "sitters"?

I'm sure we've all experienced it before, people simply standing at the start of a strike and going AFK, leaving everything up to the other two people or even a single person. Its frustrating to say the least, but what solutions do you think could be implemented? I feel some sort of "loot by kill" system would need to be implemented, not saying the more kills the better the loot, but if they do not lift their weight and aren't clearing at least 20% of the mobs, dealing at least 20% of total strike damage or present during ALL darkness zones then maybe that should reflect on loot possibility/mark/reputation rewards. This would encourage people to actually clear areas of a strike instead of running past and also stop strike sitters. The only downside to this I can see is the disadvantage it would give a level 24 compared to a level 30. It would also eliminate people coming in late and receiving rewards that a lot of the time are undeserved (although this generally doesn't bother me) as they didn't choose to drop into the strike towards the end. Any other ideas? It's obviously an ongoing issue. *EDIT* Would just like to say thanks for all the constructive responses, I've tried to keep up with it all but it can be hard at time between lunch breaks at work on mobile. Out of all the ideas I've read, compared and thought about (to make work go faster) I've listed a few that could almost work based on feedback and some initial ideas I've come up with thanks to those who have posted. Although splattering strike sitters into oblivion with your sparrow is satisfying, it's not really a full fix, so: 1•Change the bounty from "Complete any strike without dying" to something along the lines of "Complete any strike without dying and inflicting 25% or more of the total damage throughout the strike" (something along those lines). 2•From the moment a player enters a darkness zone, other members of the strike have 3-5 minutes to also enter the same darkness zone, failure to do so will result in getting booted to orbit. I understand many people rush past a majority of monsters to speed up the raid but if you are present, surely this is enough time to catch up. 3•All players must be present during the boss fight to receive rewards and bounties, whilst also inflicting at least 5-10% of the damage to boss/enemies within the boss zone/room 4•A vote kick option that becomes available once a player is inactive for 5 minutes or more. I feel this would work but nudging the controller would remove inactivity detection, so I would propose this option becomes available if they don't enter the current darkness zone within 3-5 minutes. 5•A report inactive option that becomes available under the same circumstances as mentioned above, instead of simply kicking them to orbit, make it add up so that if the same player is reported 2 times within the hour they are unable to do any vanguard strikes for a certain amount of time. Keep them coming, I will attempt to read and be as involved as possible. Although nothing will probably come of it anytime soon it's nice to have some ideas out there that might be viable. Plus it's keeping my mind busy at work. :)

I'll explain my experience this morning - I got a sneaky playtime in before work. I'll also state for the record right now I was technically in the wrong so I'm not whining. However, please don't judge me until you've read the facts as I really don't think I deserved this. Playing the Devil's lair strike in order to get my Bad Juju and Invective bounties up. I start the strike... 1. Straight away the other two players appear to leave... Right, on my own. No big deal, just be a little more careful. 2. Get to the section where the ghost "takes his time" decoding the door. Halfway through a level 26 player joins in. "Great I can be less careful" although I don't need to worry as he is going for it - but needs reviving a couple of times. Again, no big deal as I've needed reviving many times in the past – it’s called teamwork. 3. We get to the Walker section and I start gunning away at the mobs and boss. About a third of the way through, my partner comes down stairs and says "Where's my cup of tea you promised me?". She's right and so, guilt ridden, I make her a cup of tea in record time while she rummages for the pain killers as she's still suffering from minor surgery and now a cold as well. 4. I race back and find level 26 has killed off the walker and worked his way to Sepiks Prime. I race on and get the preceding hallway when my darling lady calls me back saying "Well, are you going to help me put the medicine back into the cupboard. She's emptied the cupboard finding the Ibruprofen. "I'll do it myself, you just sit down dear." "Well, I'm here now so why don't you help now?" Decision time. Do I a). go and help and AFK for a 2nd time, or b). incur the inevitable wrath of a sick and grumpy partner? I decide (correctly) b. and help as quickly as possible. 5. I return to the game to find that another player (level 30 I’ll call them) has joined in and clearly raced through the game on his sparrow and is proceeding to pummel me every time I spawn. I jump back into the game and l mow down the mobs and take down a portion of Sepiks in the process. This is with the level 30 continuing to pummel me with his sparrow for a while before jumping off and camping in the doorway to shoots Sepiks a few times before the strike ends while the "anti-camping mobs" proceed to appear because he's camping. He runs off every time they appear leaving them for us to shoot as we're the only targets left. 6. I look at the stats at the end. I’ve got 57 kills and 18 assists. Level 26 has 75 kills and 15 assists. The level 30? 0 kills and 1 assist (presumably Sepiks). 0 KILLS! Seriously? 0 kills. An experienced player with no kills in the easiest strike? Given the fact the game won’t allow you to generate a sparrow after a certain point and if you join the game halfway through, and that it will join you with the other players I’m left wondering whether they were AFKing from the start and decided to race along once the main part of the carnage had died down. Even if they weren’t, they joined in right at the end and instead of actually trying to make up a bit, they decide to punish a player who has actually played from the start. I feel for - and apologise to - the level 26 as I had every intention of helping out, but couldn’t get out of being away (not without major argument with my partner) and they were therefore left to essentially solo parts of the game. The other player? Either AFKing themselves or not exactly entering into the team spirit but felt justified in punishing me? As much as it pains me to say it, this is why I don’t believe there is an effective method of policing or punishing AFKers, no matter how annoying it is for all of us (it’s happened to me loads of times). I’m all for punishing AFKers, but not those who simply can’t avoid the situation in hand in the real world. Do you punish those with weak bladders, children, dodgy internet connections etc. You WILL end up punishing the innocent which is NOT what justice is about. The most effective way of punishing them is by reporting them to Bungie and letting the Banhammer take its revenge. As ever, I appreciate this is my opinion and I do not expect anyone to agree with me.

    • Stop crying and finish the strike? It's not that hard with only 2 PPL. I think it's kinda bungie's fault for making the game so bland that no one wants to do strikes and they'd rather afk. Maybe if kills meant something? Maybe if there was actually incentive to do things. It's the loot cave all over again, the problem isn't with the people it's with the game.

      • i just push em into the enemy, they die & leave. No one is ever afk because theyd get booted. Most are usually doing the *walking tall* bounty & once i -blam!- it up for them they leave.

      • Nah. It would be easier and better to just either have an idle timer of like a minute. Personally i'd like for them to lose gear but thats just me

"Loot by kill" was something you said early on and it gave me an idea. I don't read the whole post, (because holy shit man, that's a novel), so if you had this in there, good job. easy: how about if someone goes AFK for over 5 minutes, we can kill them and take one item of our choice from their inventory?

          • Just leave and find another team? Doesn't seem hard. Either that or finish the strike.

            • Make it so you have to be within a certain distance from the boss when he dies to get the strike reward....or have to land at least 1 shot on the boss to be eligible, just like public events

              • The issue with the timer on the darkness zone is that the person going afk can just get to the darkness and go afk instead(I have had people do this)

                  • If it's two people in my fireteam doing it, and I'm not doing the "complete a strike without dying" bounty, I'll just purposely kill myself at the next checkpoint so it forces them forward when I respawn. Then they'll be in the thick of it and have to fight.

                    • A lot of games have a vote to kick system. So they can boot out inactive/unhelp people. I think it would work well in stopping the problem but could also be abused to kick people who the other 2 arent happy with or whatever

                        • If I go into a strike by myself and get put on a fire team, I play the way they run....ie. if I see that they are going straight through,I go with them, If they are going through the complete mission, I run that way as well. As for "sitters"? The best way to deal with them is an INACTIVITY TIMER combined with a DARK ZONE TIMER for guys that want to farm on a strike or just stay moving around outside of the "dangerous" areas to get the end rewards. Inactivity kicks you to orbit & Dark Zone kills you and puts you in the current area of the other 2 team members and at that point if the player rage quits...........SO BE IT! You run strikes to fight the final Boss and/or do the entire mission....not to farm.....that is what patrol is for....players that farm strike missions do it to farm and get the rewards at the end without ever "helping" the team at the end........you can do that with a fire team of players you know....don't do it with RANDOMS.

                        • I stop working on the strike when I see somone afk. I don't mind having a 2-3 hour long strike, they usually do though. I sat with one guy at taaruc for at least an hour because he was hiding under the stair not shooting. He finally realized and started attacking and I used my titan bubble to make it harder for him to finish.
