Its reasonable.
The 'best way' (didn't use it myself) is to make 3 characters of the same class, that way you can run high level content 3 times per week without worrying about having to get 3 sets of armor.

I thought about that, but I just thought about the time of spend leveling up 2 more characters I could just spend doing raids or something else with my one. Thoughts?

It depends on how much time you want to play per week. You can only get rewards from the higher level content once per week. The Nightfall + Weekly Heroic + Raid takes 2-4 hours depending on the skill of you and your team. After that, playing with your main won't give you the 'best' rewards.
