BNG: Why did you remove Materials for Marks?

When I 1st read the patch notes I was excited to see the addition of Marks for Upgrade Materials. Finally I would have something else to spend my excess Vanguard marks on. I always like when games offer you options. If you needed extra marks, you could exchange some materials, now if you need extra materials you could trade in some marks. Of course, that excitement was quickly dashed when I discovered that you REPLACED the (Materials for Marks) with the (Marks for Materials). Why? Do you guys have some personal grudge against choices and options? Why does everything have to be one way OR the other. Why won't you provide multiple options instead of limiting us to just one? Why can't you let your players decide what they prefer to do instead of forcing everything to be all or nothing? Instead of letting people choose if they want to play PvP or PvE, you seem to be trying to push people into both. * Why not just let people enjoy the parts of Destiny they love without punishing them for it? * By replacing the material exchange, people have no choice but to run the crucible if they want to purchase anything from the faction vendors. Where before, if you didn't want to run the crucible, you could farm some materials, trade them in for marks, than spend them on the faction vendors. Well, not anymore... I just don't understand. * Why couldn't you just remove the (reputation/glimmer) gains and leave the option to trade materials for marks? At an exchange rate of 5 to 1, would being able to swap one type of Mark for another really have been so bad? * * You provided so many great new ways to aquire extra materials, than took away the only other feature they could be used for. * Sony online store Xbox online store
Destiny is a next generation first person shooter featuring an unprecedented combination of cinematic storytelling, cooperative, competitive, and public gameplay, and personal activities that are woven into an expansive, persistent online world. • This person has expressed exactly what I've been thinking. I agree completely with taking the rep gains out of turning in mats. Hell, I'm even OK with removing the crucible turn in. I'll grind some exotic bounties and build up marks to buy faction gear (though I also think the factions should accept both types of marks).

    • My material stacks are beginning to clutter up my inventory and vault. They are worse than weapon parts or the armor because you can only have stacks of 200. It sure would be nice to have something to spend them on. Something that can be always done like when i max my glimmer, i go to the cryptarch and buy the gear for the reputation.

    • They took that away because you could farm rep with a faction to easy. Use marks to buy mats, then sell mats for marks and rep. It's a loop, not cost effective but a loop.

The reason is simple if you have both you create a glitch / loop hole that players would use to get a ridiculous amount of marks / materials , which in turn would ruin the economy of the game . And if anyone says there is no economy to the game you are wrong and need to understand the structure of how a game works . But having one over the other is a choice they had to make to keep balance end of story and the way it is now is way better and to say that resources were only good to get vanguard marks so you can get easy shards just makes you sound lazy if you do your raids strikes, weekly and daily. You would have no issues getting what's ore energy! now everyone who is complaining go hit the crucible and do the strikes and stop whining! And stop finding holes in the game to make it easier . The reasons for doing this was obvious to make the game more challenging as for the fact that it's to easy to get to 30 minus having to do V.o.G.

          • I've always seen the faction venders as very one sided, despite the implication that they were in the middle of PVE and PVP. It was one thing to only be able to buy Crucible stuff with Crucible currency and reputation and Vanguard stuff with Vanguard reputation and currency, but the factions should be completely neutral. After all, while you're wearing their bond they take reputation from BOTH Crucible and Vanguard. So since I'm letting them take all my Vanguard reputation, isn't it only fair that they should accept Vanguard marks just as much as Crucible? If Bungie wanted to make the factions solely Crucible, then they shouldn't take my Vanguard rep; and even if they did make it where the factions only take Crucible rep and currency and ignore Vanguard, it's still unfair because then there are roughly 4 or 5 PVP venders and 1 or 2 PVE venders. Those of us who preferred PVE could work around all this by exchanging materials for marks, but now we're forced to play PVP in order to purchase 4/5 of the Tower vender's stuff. Is it so hard to make a materials for marks/marks for materials system, and allow the factions to accept Vanguard AND Crucible marks?

                • Can't believe I wasted so much time farming materials for upgrades, also to get marks for new gear. Use to be my favorite past time waiting for the walker in the Cosmodrome, farming spin metal. Now it seems like it was all a waste of my time. Why couldn't you have it both ways BNG, Marks to buy materials for those that want or need them and do not want to gather and materials to sell for marks for those that gathered them and want to. Seems pretty simple to me.

                  • To all the PvPers saying 'Well of course PvE people shouldn't have access to PvP vendor gear so they shouldn't earn marks from materials.' ... That's fine. Most of us never did anyway, because buying the gear also required the ranks, and if you don't PvP, you don't rank up either. The thing I, and likely many others, are pissed about is that the 3 other faction vendors, Dead Orbit, etc, also require crucible marks even though they can be ranked up through PvE. So the mat exchange was the only way for non-PvPers to buy their gear... And now that ability is completely gone. So essentially, PvPers now get access to 5 vendors, while PvE people get access to just the Vanguard one. How is that fair and balanced? An easy fix would be to let you use your vanguard marks on the other vendors too, of course, or put in more factions with Vanguard mark gear to offset the existing ones. Just my 2 cents.

                    • I discovered this by going to the Crucible Quartermaster and turning in a bunch of things only to have the system boot me and when I come back, my 200 crucible marks are gone and in their place, over 400 Spinmetal. So I'm upset but I assume that at least I'll be able to trade them back. I'll lose some marks in the trade but it won't be a total loss. Except no...no, I can't. The cursed thing only gives materials, doesn't take them. I go to all the other faction people... same story. I loathe PvP (and I tried every kind of match there is and the Iron Banner, so it's not like I'm dismissing it out of hand). I was trading in materials so that I could level up enough to buy weapons and armour which could be dismantled for parts, if need be. Now I can't even do that. It's ridiculous to FORCE an attitude of cooperation on game players. Coercive battling for little or no reward is like being forced to play team sports in high school. It sucked then, it sucks now. I should be allowed to focus on the aspects of this game I enjoy, but instead I am continuously pushed towards PvP. The 7 exotic weapon bounties I got... deleted them, because I'd never be able to get through the parts that require time in the Crucible. There is so much about this game I like, some that I love. But the constant subversive nagging to join Crucible matches is beginning to get to me. Because that's not choosing my destiny, that's submitting to someone else's agenda.

I'd rather run 100 patrols and exhange for Marks, then to play 1 crucial game. When a game developer "Boxes" everyone in a Type of play, doesn't work !

                      • I think that they should have the vanguard vendors use vanguard marks, crucible vendors use crucible marks and the 3 other factions should accept both kinds of marks. Also instead of a cap of 100 vanguard and 100 crucible marks have it be a max of 200 marks of any combination.

                        • i just played on my gf account doing crucible for the marks. i walked in circles around the spawn point and shot up in the air. i did not care who won or lost, i was just there to get the marks. i got my 2 marks, now i only need 63 more to buy that pair of legendary gauntlets. that is only 35 more pointless matches when i could have been walking on venus picking up spirit bloom and having FUN. i could be drunk sniping cabal heads on mars as i slowly walk my way around the relic iron route. i could be bladedancing my way around the moon getting ascendant materials (or motes of light) to upgrade her legendaries from public events between times i could collect helium. and if i have vanguard marks from any strikes i do i can buy any materials i need to upgrade her guns and armor if i do not have enough left over from selling what i collected. but NO, they killed pvE, so i will have to see you in the crucible along with several thousand of my pissed off pvE-only players. you could pray really hard that we are not on your team, or bungie could add back in materials for marks, either one will do just fine. the pvP players hated farming pvE for upgrade materials and you gave them the option to buy them, but in doing so you oddly took away the pvE players ability to sell materials for marks and forced us to play pvP. well, you got what you got, a bunch of useless pvE players clogging up Crucible just to get marks. Even Lord Shaxx is pissed off about us being in there. is it really that hard to add four more slots to the UI? the code for selling materials for marks was already there. the exchange rate is fine since exploiting it only loses you marks. take away the rep if you are worried about that being exploited. just let the pvE players collect the collectables and sell them for marks like before and continue to the pvP players buy their upgrade materials like they do now. and everybody will be happy. in their own little world. or miserable in what used to be the crucible. love, linhue "cayde-6 wants to meet. bring a side arm."

I agree that there should be both. I don't have a group (I am going to look into that actually) but even if I did there would be times I enjoy playing patrol or story missions. Anyway, I can see how players will end up with a huge amount of materials and I think there should be some way to trade them. If the transaction of marks for materials can only go one way, then why bother with materials at all?

Still to this day not understand as to why there are no "Faction Marks". If your character wears the class item for a particular Faction, you earn rep with that Faction regardless if you are doing PvP or PvE. So why have the Faction Vendors only accept Crucible Marks, and not Vanguard Marks as well? Why even have players earn Faction rep in PvE with the class items if the vendors only accept Crucible Marks? Why not convert the Vanguard/Crucible Marks to "Faction Marks", the same way the rep is converted from Vanguard/Crucible to Faction when using the class items? Who gains what out of this set up? Still waiting on answers...........

                                    • I absolutely agree with this. Materials were NOT a problem for me, however MARKS, namely crucible marks because I prefer pve are slow to get. You swapped them around rather than allowing the player to choose. Asinine decision by whoever made that decision. Bungie, could you now explain the reason to stop and gather materials or open chests on your 'open world' patrol map? Because I am failing to see why you'd bother. It is now more efficient to do the mundane missions and NOT waste time bothering to stop and explore. -blam!-ing incredibly ridiculous design in a game that has so many poor design flaws that have been spelled out to you by the 'players' that play your game.
