Fellow Guardians, WOW! Thank you All so much for all the Upvotes and Signatures, this thread took off like a rocket and I cannot express how thankful I am, you're a great bunch of people :)
(Please UpVote and Comment "Signed" if you want this to 'Trend" and be seen by DeeJ etc)
Nobody enjoys doing hours of farming SpinMetal, Spirit Bloom, Helium Filaments or Relic Iron
It takes 64-80 of these materials to fully upgrade a Legendary or Exotic.
This equates to the farming for the almost a hour.
In the late end-game most players will need to put in about 10+ hours of farming.
I accept this is part of the RPG-MMO game style put we’re approaching South Park “Killing Boars” in WoW magnitudes here.
Why can’t we receive a percentage of the Materials we’ve spent in return for dismantling an upgraded piece of gear.
Even a token 25% would be better than nothing, it would help the end-game in all the right ways.
An amount like 50% would be great but I doubt this will happen given how the rest of the upgrading system works.
33% would be extremely fair, still require a decent bit off farming but not completely ruin the late-end game experience.
To have a decent PvE and PvP load out takes almost 1,200 Materials.
That’s 3 fully upgraded Legendaries/Exotics in each of the 3 weapon slots.
6 fully upgraded pieces of armour (say 2 different exotics for an alternative PvP load out or alternative Exotic to suit your 2nd Subclass).
Come on Bungie, with the DLC launching soon there are gonna be a lot of very annoyed level 28+ players who spent many hours getting high level gear.
That gear will now be redundant (if we ignore all “you can upgrade it further” speculation).
We’ll have players (myself included) with all sorts of Raid gear, Iron Banner gear, Queens Wrath Gear (haha) and Exotics.
The least you could do is give us a decent portion of our Materials (and Shards/Energy) back.
Please sign, like, bump, upvote, whatever this thread if you’d like to see it addressed by Bungie and the Community management team
Added a poll so you can vote for what percentage you think we should receive when scrapping gear.
Good Luck out there Guardians.
Thanks in Advance GenericDreadHead
Edit 1: Spelling and so forth :P
Edit 2: The Zero % Option edit. Wow, ok seems like I'm getting a lot of hate for the Poll options, for what it's worth I tried editing the poll to add a 0% option.
Guess what? I can't edit it, so.... sorry about that. Really the idea of the Thread was to get "Signatures/Bumps" and "Upvotes/Likes" to keep it trending, the poll was merely an after thought and not put in with a "Add every option under the sunsinger" attitude. It was, if you "agree" with the concept of the Thread, you could add some self expression by picking your preferred solution. You will also notice I did not add a 100% option... or a 12.5% option, or a 75% option etc. I'm absolutely more than happy for a Mod/Admin to step in at the back end and add a 4th Poll option for 0%. Sorry for not having considered the 0% option, as you will see the other 3 options were in my thought process when I wrote the original post. Thanks for your feedback, at least nobody died..... yet... >:-|
Edit 3: Ok..... jeez louise... look I realise that DeeJ and Co would have listened to my idea even If I was a sole person saying what I'm saying, that's whats good about the community. What I was trying to convey in the original post was a singular straight forward fix to what I and many others perceive to be one of the biggest mis-steps in the games flow of excitement (farming).
I'm sorry if this kicked off any other petitions or just added to an existing petition problem.
What I saw, when I saw a lot of other posters suggestions were, and I'm going to be brutality honest here:
Posts asking for about 7 big changes, the kind of things that would be realistically over maybe 4 patches. I may be in the minority here, but 1 thread per suggestion would catch my attention and could clearly convey it's message.
Also, some of what was being asked for was very subjective, I tried my best to be as objective as possible, taking my own personal annoyance at farming and stepping back and trying to focus on that being a possible problem with the games mechanics and less of a "dag nab it, I just hates me doing some loops cause it's all up in my business for 20 minutes".
Also, I saw a lot of "Xur should or should not sell this" and "This gun and that gun should be buffed/nerfed".
There are some great threads with some really great suggestions (see the thread to enable to edit character looks etc) but they were buried in the likes of the above mentioned.
What I'm trying to say in hindsight is, in my long winded way, I maybe should have left out the "Petition" part and just said, "Do you think?" and give Yes, No and Maybe So Poll options, but well, here we are now.
I realise my voice alone would not have been unheard, I just kind of hoped maybe some like minded voices could gather in the same space together.
Also thanks to everyone who pointed out recent comments by DeeJ and co where they say they are address the Farming and Economy.
This is very welcome news but I was just trying to create some urgency I guess. I mean they also said Thorn would be buffed ages ago :D
Finally thanks for all of you with you patience and understanding and ,from what I can tell, little or no trolling :)
We've all made mistake on internet forums, if I could turn back time and edit the thread I would.
So much love for this forum and community right now. Group hug? Anyone? Telekineses Hug maybe? :D

Signed.

bump, would be nice to get a few more when you scrap upgraded gear
-
Lovely idea, but never going to happen.
-
this isnt a good concept.
-
Give us all our materials back
-
Why would you ever need more materials then? "Oh, this item is better than my old one, lets break down the old one and upgrade this one". It's already easy enough to get materials from just common play. I'm sitting on 800 spinmetal, 50 shards, and 82 energy, just from normal play, a few hours a day here and there. You get plenty of mats from the game unless you're completely lazy and can't be arsed to pick materials while running your bounties.
-
In LOTRO, when you leveled up and deconstructed a legendary weapon, you got an experience rune to help with leveling other weapons. This rune was worth more than if you deconstructed a non-leveled weapon. I think giving something back to help with leveling new/replacement gear is a good idea. Grind is part of the game, but with the DLC coming and a higher light level, we will have to get new armor. Please don't force us to start all the way back at square one, ignoring any effort put into upgrading the current gear we use.
-
maybe not the a large protion of the mats but a portion of the exp would be nice...
-
Farming spinmetal is NOT fun. Vote 'YES'.
-
I'll bump but you shouldn't get too much back I think 25% is fair
-
Edited by Barbatos: 11/26/2014 4:25:30 PMI would like to get more ascendant material back for dismantling upgraded gear, two is not enough. As for materials there needs to be a vendor who caters to that- sells material and/or allows us to exchange one material type for another. For example, I have over 1100 hadronic essence, as a lvl 29 warlock what am I'm going to do with all of that?
-
You lost me at 10 hours of farming. If you're strictly speaking just armor, that would be maximum 320 materials for all 30 light gear, which is JUST over 2 hours of farming.
-
Mats outside of ascendent material yes! Ascendent material is already way to plentiful!!
-
-
I don't care about shards and energy, they are easy to get and infinitely more interesting to obtain than the base materials. Please bungie sell these, strange coins, vanguard marks, glimmer whatever just sell them in the tower. Hell even if they made a microtransaction I'd even buy that! Did a total up of my gear yesterday and what I need is roughly: 128 spinmetal, 64 helium filaments, 500+ spirit blooms and roughly 300 relic iron. It's getting to the stage I might pay an illegal immigrant just to sit at my home and farm this trash for me while I go to work.
-
The magic smoke gets used up, there is nothing to get back.
-
Why would anyone waste their time upgrading their gear just to scrap it? I've never scraped an upgraded piece
-
I agree 1000%. One piece of armor can effectively be worth many hours if you factor in the farmed materials and 16-18 shards. Not to mention if you bought it with 65 marks. To get back 1-2 shards, 3 material and 200 glimmer is a joke. I know you like to steal my time and life away Bungie, just please... lube it up before you slide it in.
-
Upgrading is your gamble, there are other games that have the same consequences. I think its fair. Materials are easy to get anyway with just a bit of grinding. Should be happy to get anything more than glimmer out of it.
-
Not worried about getting SpinMetal, Helium filaments, Relic iron or Spirit bloom back, BUT it would be nice to get at least 25% of your Shards back. Kind of blows to dismantle a piece of legendary armor you spent 18 or so Shards on to get to level 27 and only get 2 shards back.
-
Signed, regardless of how easy it is to get mats, we still should get something a little more if we put in the effort to upgrade a piece of armor fully. I've gotten to the point where I now get duplicates of armor that have slightly better stats (an extra 20 discipline for instance) that I will now level up and destroy the old one for.
-
Best idea I've seen yet
-
this would "ruin" the idea of binding people to the screen ..
-
I agree, farming may be part of the RPG experience but the materials do kind of take the cake. It shouldn't take longer to get the materials than it does to get shards or energy.
