I certainly have had many experiences where the "auto assist" drags off a long shot to one passing by, intermingling enemies, or even when I tried shooting explosives in PvE. It is frustrating as hell. In other games when turning it off, I've noticed how much it's actually helped though. I suppose it should be an option for those few who'd use it but I suspect most would switch back as soon as they saw what's it's like without it.
