It sounds like a few lvl 30s found the IB was too hard for them and decided to compete on the forums

Pretty much. The only people complaining about Iron Banner armor are PvE-only players. PvP players are happy. Those who play both PvE and PvP are happy. When the gear was under 30 light, the complainers could go, "See? This is a PvE game first and foremost and I'm better than you, because you can't get to 30 without Raid gear." As soon as PvP had a chance to grant level 30 gear the vocal part of the PvE only crowd felt either: - annoyed that they had to grind through the Raid X times to get their gear while the PvPers were simply "given" theirs - threatened that PvP is a real part of the game where they thought of it as an add on (look at all the threads complaining about PvP part of exotic bounties) - annoyed that PvP level 30 gear has perks they might want, but they don't want/can't grind out Iron Banner rep. Honestly, PvP is much more friendly to the person who can't organize a time/group for a Raid, so even for some PvE centric people, PvP gear is a nice chance to get leveled up. I can only imagine the same people who complain about "true 30" are the same ones who complain when Xur comes to town.
