Again? *groans* Alright, alright. I'll do it but geeze. There IS a search function. The Shrine of Oryx, if you were paying attention, is not so much a shrine as it is a long distance communicator to the Hive God. What you killed, was the Eye of Oryx. Likely a guardian of the Shine tasked with ensuring that pesky interlopers like us, do not sully or destroy their means of communication with Oryx. What Oryx is, is still a mystery. Other then being the supposed penultimate leader of the Hive, worshiped as their unquestionable commander. Similar to how the Vex Worship the Dark Miasma that is the Darkness in the Black Garden. My personal theory is that Oryx is the name the Hive have given the Darkness that caused the Collapse. Just as current religions have the different names for the same deities (The Roman renaming of the Greek Pantheon for example) why shouldn't difference species have their own personal names for the Darkness? Crota is a General. His role is similar to that of the Vanguard Mentors in the Tower. His job is to lead the Hive on the Moon. Currently he's been sleeping something off since his last major offensive but now he's waking up to continue the fight. If Oryx is another name for the Darkness. Then it's entirely possible that the Darkness empowered Crota the same way the Traveler empowered us Guardians with the Light. Thus making Crota a "child of Oryx" in the sense of being "reborn" the way Guardians were. The Guardians cannot withstand another major assault by Crota. That's why we gave up the moon. The casualties were too much so we let the Hive have the moon. Now that Crota is rumored to be returning, we have to ensure we put him down. Otherwise this time, we lose Earth. Game Over. The Dark Below is centered more around Crota the General rather then Oryx the God. Though we might get more information on what Oryx actually is. After Crota, that's the next big Hive Bugaboo.

 • Wow that's extremely interesting. So if I understood correctly, what you're saying is that Oryx is not necessarily a physical presence or at least we're not sure he is, and he's kind of like "God" in Catholicism and that Crota is like "Jesus" in the sense that he's not his physical son just an extended God in a sense. Someone the Hive worship but not above Oryx and not Oryx's physical son, correct?

 • It clearly states that the hive believe Crota is their god. And Crota is the spawn of oryx. You only fight a gaurd at the shrine of oryx. The shrine is a communicator to oryx...who no one knows exactly where he is. We cut the communication link only , nothing more.

 •
"Crota's spawn will snuff out the worlds of Light, and Oryx's coming shall be unfettered." Spawn of Crota Faction Grimore Card
Like most religious texts. A mortal champion often paves the way for the coming of the God to the Mortal Realm. For Dark Gods this is especially true. Crota is their Champion. He paves the way for Oryx's coming.
"The name Oryx appears too many times in Hive rituals to be ignored." -Blood of Oryx Faction Grimiore Card
You do not invoke a name in a ritual unless it's one of great power. By invoking the name, you are asking the individual in question to bestow their power to fuel the ritual. Again, Crota is the empowered Chosen Champion. Oryx is the Dark God.
