[UPDATED] 12 year-old shot and killed by police
Police in Cleveland fatally shot a 12-year-old boy wielding what turned out to be a replica gun. They were responding to a 911 call in which a man said a juvenile was scaring people with a gun that probably was fake. The boy, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office as Tamir Rice, was shot in the torso in the playground area of a recreation center Saturday afternoon. Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said one officer fired twice after the boy pulled the fake weapon -- which didn't have the orange safety indicator usually found on the muzzle -- from his waistband but had not pointed it at police. The boy did not make verbal threats, Tomba said, but grabbed the replica handgun after being told to raise his hands. He died Sunday at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Sorry, I don't feel bad. There's a reason those orange tips are on toy guns. Here's a link to a NYT article, including the CCTV footage. The video is obviously NSFW. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/27/us/video-shows-cleveland-officer-shot-tamir-rice-2-seconds-after-pulling-up-next-to-him.html?_r=0 In light of seeing the video, I no longer have an argument supporting what the police did. Their actions amount to little more than a drive-by shooting.

Im not gunna say the kid deserved it, because every life is valuable and should be cherished. But the police did their job. What people fail to realize is that kids across the country quite often do bring real guns to school, and its a miracle that innocent kids dont get accidentally shot then. So the question is: how were the police supposed to know if it were a real gun or not? Why risk two officers' lives at the chance that it couldve been a real gun? Another point that people fail to realize is that non-lethal means of subduing an attacker at range are usually limited to bean-bag rounds fired from a 12 or 20-ga shotgun or a taser, either of which couldve proven just as fatal, seeing as how the bean-bags are designed to knock out full-grown persons, not children. And then there's the age factor. And the fact that the kid even brought the gun to school in the first place. But in the end, a kid lost his life and its something to mourn over... hopefully its a stern warning to children across the nation about the lethality and seriousness of a real firearm, and how look-alike airsoft (or any type) of plastic gun should be avoided by them until proper training and safety precautions.

I have similar guns except they have the orange tips on them and I still won't take them outside because they are easily mistaken for real handguns. The real injustice was that parents let this child have this and go out in public with it. Also airsoft guns are far from toys the ones that I have can pierce through skin.

  • This is the saddest thing I've heard all day. A child playing with a toy gun, shot and killed because the gun was missing an orange cap. What evidence was there to suggest that the firearm was real? Why wasn't he tased? What else was done to disarm him? Shame on all who said he deserved it. I hope you and yours never make mistakes or get confused when a grown man sticks a weapon in your face. He was twelve. He did not deserve it. How could he deserve it? At twelve years old and in a playground with a toy. Poor little soul.

    • When i was a kid you could even pretend you re shooting at him and the cop wouldn't give a -blam- now you point a toy and die, thats academy everyone is a suspect training for ya all, the kid should have obeyed - the kid shouldn't have been playing - should have stayed at home. Wtf is wrong you people a cop full of fear paniced and killed a 12 year old and you blammers are talking about a 12 old attitude? Really? seems you havent ever checked yourself to think what a liitle -blam- you were

      • Why exactly do people think that the fact that he was 12, means that the policeman was wrong? fair enough if you think thst he was was wrong to make such a hasty decision (although honestly, if you were facing a possible armed subject who reaches for a real looking weapon what the -blam!- else are you gonna do, stand there like a lemon while they shoot you? ) In America, it's easy enough for a child to get a gun if their parents own one and fail to lock it up and there have been a fair few shootings in which the perpetrator was a child. you get a call about a possible armed suspect, then they become a possible threat which you must address as such, not a child. Most importantly, this policeman was flying blind and had a very short time to react; if he hadn't innocent bystanders could have been hurt if the weapon had been real. He didn't have the benefit of hindsight and the luxury of time that all of you reading about it after have.

          • Parents, teach your children how to act when dealing with guns (toys or otherwise) as well as police. Children, realize that the stupid decisions you make will have repercussions, even at a young age.

            • Would you be responding differently to this article if was just titled "man shoots child armed with fake weapon"? If this same exact situation occurred but made no mention of a police officer but instead an average citizen, would you change your opinion on the matter?

                • It's illegal to carry a firearm in the UK and our regular cops don't have guns. If less than 1% of the population have a firearm less people get shot and less people feel the need to defend themselves by having firearms. It's the future :) The only time it'll be good to own a gun in America is if you got invaded by an enemy. Apart from that there is no reason

Yeah it is just so pathetic recruiting rookies with lethal weapons. But this argument is kind of bidirectional.one may say it is the child's fault for not complying with the orders(and he kind of slipped his hand on his waist.so therefore got shot as a natural response mechanism )on the other hand it could(and according to me)is the fault of the policemen, who resorted to lethality when other non lethal methods were present plus that mofo shot in the torso when the most common protocol is to shoot below. .It is so heart wreathing though.

                              • Why would they shoot a 12 year old boy ? I mean they could have probably guessed that he was around that age did they seriously think he was a threat ? And they shot him at a playground ? Are you kidding me ? Police are so trigger happy most people feel more scared with them around these days aren't they supposed to make us feel safe ?
