Police in Cleveland fatally shot a 12-year-old boy wielding what turned out to be a replica gun. They were responding to a 911 call in which a man said a juvenile was scaring people with a gun that probably was fake.
The boy, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office as Tamir Rice, was shot in the torso in the playground area of a recreation center Saturday afternoon.
Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said one officer fired twice after the boy pulled the fake weapon -- which didn't have the orange safety indicator usually found on the muzzle -- from his waistband but had not pointed it at police. The boy did not make verbal threats, Tomba said, but grabbed the replica handgun after being told to raise his hands. He died Sunday at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Sorry, I don't feel bad. There's a reason those orange tips are on toy guns.
Here's a link to a NYT article, including the CCTV footage. The video is obviously NSFW.

In light of seeing the video, I no longer have an argument supporting what the police did. Their actions amount to little more than a drive-by shooting.

The CCTV of the incident has been released. Kid didn't stand a chance. Rip little man. X

What you said was toxic man, not hating on you.. But not cool, as everyone else said.
-
That's awful. You should feel bad. It was a kid ffs. I would've been gunned down about a hundred times when I was younger if there were loose cannon police in my area. Dafuq

And here in Australia we have people protesting over the fact our laws are getting too strict to do with gangs and vehicles though I honestly don't know the last time someone was shot here, well in the sense of an unarmed person shot. I think someone was shot at the gold cost about a week agoooooo. Though in most cases if you don't have a gun or a knife and you get shot by the police, the shooter ends up being prosecuted.
There's a reason those orange tips are on toy guns.
More to the point, why the hell didn't this one have an orange tip?
-
And that's why all toy guns you in major retailers have orange tips on them so officers can distinguished them from actual guns. Parents leave their guns out in the open all the time. Look up the mother who was shot dead earlier today or maybe it was yesterday by her 3 year old son with a semi automatic hand gun.

This is horrible bait.

m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5824684 I'm sure this little girl was very threatening too There are way too many recent police shootings of innocent people. 1. Seat belt violation- unarmed man shot and killed for following officers directions 2. Old man shot reaching for his cane- I believe he was a vet 3. Man shot in ny for walking down the stairs with his gf 4. While controversial- mike brown 5. And now this poor kid There are a few issues I personally find here. 1. All of these people are black. Could be coincidence but literally all of them are black. 2. Way too many people are being killed when they pose no lethal threat to anyone. I'm just surprised so many of you are content with the militarization of the police force and the policy they seem to be adopting of shoot first, ask questions later.

Edited by saltymcsaltman: 11/26/2014 7:08:26 AMand i can't blame you. but hey, there are alternatives right? like going up to him to pepper spray him, which doesn't put the officers at risk right? or trying to use a taser, which doesn't put said officer at risk either right?

I want to say he deserved it but I can't. No child deserves to be killed. But he had it coming. If his parents had any sense in them they'd have taught him to never point a gun(even a toy) at people, let alone police. Then you rip the orange tip off to make it look like a real gun? Like come on. If you act like that then bad stuff will happen. Parents should be held accountable for not raising their child correctly. Maybe the police need to be looked over but they were doing their job. Kid or not, when someone is pointing a gun at them they have the right to defend themselves.
-
Rule #1 on most toy guns DO NOT MODIFY I swear kids can't read.
-
See kids? That's why you don't take of the orange. Two lives were ruined by it.
-
Dumb kid
-
I'm so glad this kid is dead who literally wasn't a threat to no one while there are crazy guys charging into schools and movie theaters going on killing sprees and either killing themselves or getting -blam!-ING BROUGHT IN ALIVE. Bullshit. Absolute bullshit.

Edited by Twitchyloner: 11/25/2014 12:50:34 AMWhat a waste of life, he's a kid? Couldn't they talk him out of it or something.. This is suss..

12 year old has a gun! Shoot him in the chest! Really? He's 12. You could easily taze him, tranq him, or shoot him in the arm holding the gun. You don't have to shoot him at a fatal point. I'm training to be a cop, but I would be the hero on the news before being the asshole cops people read about. However, I still blame the parents. Always blame the parents. It was the parent's toy gun anyway. They didn't teach him about not playing with it.
-
People should riot over this, instead of mike brown.
-
1. Why would he be scaring people with it? 2. How'd he get ahold of a replica of a gun? 3. Where were the parents? 4. Aren't we always told as children to cooperate with the police?
-
You're extremely naive. Many of these do not have orange tips, and in your own article provided it says the child never pointed it at the police, this is blatant murder on their part.
-
At least i'm in Canada Bungie should nerf the cops gun
-
lolol wat a fag plaing wivth facke gunz
-
Bungie should just nerf the cops.
-
Pointing the gun was very stupid for anyone under the age of 7 but the PO could have shot him in the leg or foot.
-
Did he get a care package after he killed him or was that his 4th kill?
-
and that kids is what tazers are for

In a country with 1000 billion firearms hanging around would you take the chance if it was pointed at you ? ........
