You get the rewards for both modes, not double hard mode.
Think of it this way. When you go into normal a loot table is generated. When you defeat an event a dice is rolled to see what item you get. Same things happen on hard, only there are added items available to hard only.
So when you do hard mode without doing normal you roll one dice for each table.
I actually got the glass minuet and aspect of glass on the same Atheon kill. I died a little inside.

I can see it actually being this, I wonder if it was intended though. The benefit to running hard without doing normal could be unintended.

Not true. If you get a normal drop and a hard drop as you are implying then riddle me this... How did I get 4 helmets from 2 hard raids with no normal raid first!?

You can get double hard rewards... I got 2 timepieces from the same gatekeeper kill. 2 helmets from one atheon kill. A vex and a helmet... I could go on.

Chest 1 = materials once per week Oracle = 1 hard roll, normal roll Templar = 1 hard roll, 1 normal roll Bonus chest = once a week Exotic chest = 1 hard , 1 normal Gorgon chest = once a week Gatekeepers = 1 hard, 1 normal Atheon = 2 hard, 2 normal (both are rolled at the same time) Chatterwhite is considered bonus it doesn't take up a loot roll.

Wrong again ive gotten two fate bringers and two helmets Again, since you don't get it, its all hard rolls but hard contains all normal drops as well. So you could get two hard exclusives or walk away with two things you could get in normal. Its all luck but doing hard first is the inly way to possibly get double hard drops

Maybe the daily was intended to work this way and it's not. Or maybe they just said you can do the daily once if you don't so it on 28 then you don't get your materials. But you could do the weekly on all 3 levels and get 3 coins per run if you start on the easiest. Or you could do it on level 28 and get all 9 coins. (3 coins per difficulty, 3*3=9)
